Men's Lightweight Rowing Trophy Dedicated Sunday

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Harvard University has found a very appropriate way to immortalize "one of its greatest lightweight oarsmen." The Michael W. Christian '60 Trophy will be dedicated at Sunday's EARC Sprints in Worcester, Mass.

The trophy’s inscription reads,

The Michael W. Christian ’60 Trophy

Presented Annually to the
Ivy League Men’s Lightweight Rowing Champion

Given by the Friends of Harvard Rowing
to honor one of Harvard’s greatest lightweight oarsmen

- Member of three undefeated Varsity Lightweight Crews
- Three-time winner of the Thames Challenge Cup, Henley Royal Regatta
- Member victorious Cambridge Crew 1961 Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race

Dedicated May 13, 2007
Sculpted by Timothy Maslyn

Mr. Christian, who passed away in 1984, is also a member of the Harvard Varsity Club’s Hall of Fame. The piece was sculpted by Tim Maslyn, who has produced 18 permanent team trophies for the Ivy League. You can learn more about Mr. Maslyn’s work by clicking here.

No league has dominated men's lightweight rowing like the Ivies. A non-Ivy varsity eight has won the EARC Grand Final only twice in the 61-year history of the Sprints. Further evidence of the League's balance in the sport, all seven of the schools that support men's lightweight rowing have won at least one Grand Finals title.

Harvard men’s lightweight crews remarkably have made the Grand Final in all 61 EARC events. Harvard is seeded first at this year’s event and looks to be almost assured of continuing that streak.
