HANOVER, N.H. -- Director of Athletics
Harry Sheehy announced today the hiring of
Sean Healey as the head coach of the Dartmouth
men’s lightweight crew team. Healey comes to Dartmouth from
Cornell, where he served as the freshman lightweight rowing coach
for the past six years.
"I'm excited to welcome Sean and his family to Dartmouth," said
Sheehy. "He has been one of the most accomplished freshmen coaches
in our League and is fully prepared to assume a head coaching role.
It's not easy to replace a coach like Dan Roock,
but I'm confident that we've found the right person to build upon
the successful tradition of our lightweight program."
Healey comes to Dartmouth after six very successful seasons with
the Big Red. In Healey's tenure, the Big Red freshmen posted a
29-13 regular season Ivy League record and claimed back-to-back
Kilpatrick Cup titles at the Eastern Sprints, as the league’s
top freshmen eight.
In addition to his responsibilities with the lightweight freshmen,
Healey assisted the varsity crews and helped the Cornell squad to
two consecutive IRA titles in 2007 and 2008 while assisting the Big
Red to the Jope Cup, as the Eastern Sprints team champion in
2008.
"It's an honor to come to Hanover to lead the Dartmouth
lightweight crew team," said Healey. "I'm eager to add to the
tradition and build upon the success of the program. I look
forward to working with the athletes, the athletic department and
the very supportive alumni of the program to uphold the high
standards of Dartmouth rowing, in the classroom, on the water, and
in the community – while winning a lot of races in the
process."
Healey also has coaching experience at the junior level, serving
as an assistant coach with the Three Rivers Rowing Association and
well as the Steel City Rowing Club. He also spent time as the
novice coach with the Carnegie Mellon Rowing Club.
An accomplished rower in his own right, Healey was a two-year
varsity letterwinner for the Big Red from 2001-05. Healey led
Cornell to three second-place finishes at Eastern Sprints in 2002,
2003 and 2005, while also claiming the IRA Pair Championship as a
senior.
During his collegiate career at Cornell, Healey was awarded the
Courtney Award, given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies
the ideals of former Cornell coach, Charles
Courtney. He also earned the HammerAward and a spot on the
Wall of Honor during his career.
Healey earned his Bachelor of Science, Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering from Cornell and spent a year as an associate engineer
at Bechtel Bettis, Inc., in Pennsylvania before embarking on his
coaching career.
Healey's wife, Heather, is a Dartmouth graduate and a former
captain of the Dartmouth women's crew team. They have a seven-month
old son, Ian.
