The Lions, who entered the weekend as the No. 1 team in the nation according to the USFCA poll, defeated Harvard to open the day on Sunday, 14-13, in a thrilling manner. Trailing 13-12, Columbia scored bout-winning points nearly simultaneously on side-by-side strips to claim the victory.

However, it was Princeton who played the role of spoiler a few hours later. The Tigers gave Columbia all it could handle, coming away with a 14-13 win moments after Harvard finished off a 17-10 win over Brown, setting off a wild celebration on the other side of the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center.
