RADFORD, Va. -- Dartmouth junior
In order to advance as an individual, a player must post the lowest score outside of the members of the top five teams. Coastal Carolina finished in seventh place, by the Chanticleers’ Sebastian Soderberg tied the course record on Saturday with a five-under 67 to finish in a tie for second at with a four-under 212.
Abraham Ancer of Oklahoma took medalist honors by shooting six-under par on the par-72, 7,685-yard course, including a three-under 69 in the final round. Soderberg, tied for second with Georgia Tech teammates Kyle Scott and James White, while Duke’s Julian Sari helped lead the Blue Devils to the team title by finishing in fifth place at two-under. But it was Tim Gornik that stole the show on Saturday by breaking the course record with a six-under 66 to get back to even par in a tie for eighth.
Yale, which advanced to the East Regional as the 2011 Ivy League Champion, finished in 13th. The Elis came into the tournament seeded 13th, a ranking they did in fact ultimately achieve on the final day's play Saturday. The day also provided thrills atop the leaderboard, when Duke made a late charge against rivals Georgia Tech, which had been leading the first two days, to take out the tournament. While Duke closed play with an overall team score of 865 (+1) – just four strokes ahead of Georgia Tech – the Elis finished at 923 (+59), a result that reflected the difficult course faced by golfers.
Still, there were glimmers of the golfing prowess that has brought the Bulldogs their best season in some time. Led by senior captain Thomas McCarthy, in what will be his final tournament for the team, the team made every effort to show the same form it had on display in winning the Princeton Invitational and Ivy League Championship this past season. McCarthy shot a final round 73 (+1) to finish at +5 and a tie for 17th in the tournament.
