GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Under windy conditions that saw gusts reach as high as 30 miles per hour, experience proved pivotal throughout the first round of the 2012 Ivy League Men's Golf Championship at the Galloway National Golf Club. Seniors Peter Williamson of Dartmouth and Scotty Williams of Penn took the 18-hole lead with two-over par 73's. The duo, which has combined to win the last three individual Ivy League titles, leads the field by three strokes.
With a birdie on the first hole, Williamson picked up where he left off last season when he won his second career Ivy League title (he also won in 2009). He went on to card a two-over par 73 on Friday that included an even par 36 on the difficult back nine.
Williams, the 2010 Ivy League Champion, also fired an opening round 73. On the front nine, he bogeyed the fourth but bounced right back with a birdie on the fifth. He then bogeyed the eighth but again answered with a birdie on the ninth for an even par 35 on the front nine.
Dartmouth, which teed off early in the day with Brown, holds the team lead after day one with a 310. The balanced Big Green attack included Williamson's 73, James Pleat's 77, Joe Maziar's 79 and Charlie Edler's 81. Pleat's 77 put him in a four-way tie for fourth, while Edler was the only player in the field to record and eagle as he carded a three on the par-5 ninth.
Led by Michael Yiu's 76, Columbia finished the day two strokes adrift of Dartmouth (312). Yiu's five-over par 76 places him alone in third as he closed his round by playing the final four holes at one-under par. The Lions were the only team to have all four scorers break 80 as Jordan Lee shot a 78 and Brendan Doyle and Andrew Kim each carded 79's.
Harvard sits in third (317), followed by Penn (318), Princeton (321), Yale (329), Cornell (329) and Brown (337). Tied with Pleat for fourth are the Crimson's Akash Mirchandani and Greg Jarmas of the Tigers.
Round two of the men's championship gets underway tomorrow, April 28 with tee times set to begin at 11:00 a.m. Conditions are predicted to be cooler but with less wind. The 2012 championship marks the second consecutive season the Ivy League Championship is being contested at Golloway National and the fourth time overall (2007 and 2008).
