Dartmouth Retains Lead at the 2012 Ivy League Men's Golf Championship
GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Day two at the 2012 Ivy League Men's Golf Championship saw improved scoring as conditions were less windy throughout the day at Galloway National Golf Club. Playing in the final five pairings, Columbia and Dartmouth dueled it out and the Big Green ultimately built its two-stroke lead to four strokes following the second round.
Dartmouth senior Peter Williamson fired a two-under par 69 to take the outright lead at an even par 142. He enters the final day with a seven-stroke lead over Harvard's Akash Mirchandani, Penn's Scotty Williams and Columbia's Michael Yiu, who all sit at seven over par (149) for the tournament. Mirchandani shot a second day 72 that included four birdies and five bogeys.
Williamson's two-under 69 included four birdies and two bogeys as he was one-under par on both the front and back nines. Williamson will be looking to become just the second three-time individual medalist in Ivy League Championship history, as Yale's Bob Heintz - who has split time between the PGA and Nationwide Tours - won the Ivy title from 1990-92. The second day 69 matched his first round score at Galloway National in the 2011 Ivy League Championship.
In addition to Williamson, James Pleat (76), Charlie Edler (72) and Daniel Knight (77) scored for the Big Green. Edler bounced back from an opening round 81 with a one-over par total on the strength of a one-under par back nine.
Columbia remains in second after shooting a second round 296 in which Yiu and Andrew Kim each carded two-over oar 73’s. Ford Fischer, who shot a second round 78, carded the tournament's second eagle on the par-five ninth.
Harvard sits in third, followed by Penn, Princeton, Cornell, Yale and Brown. The Big Red shaved 18 strokes off of its day one score, carding a day two 311. Sophomore Carl Schimenti led Cornell with a two-over par 73 that included four birdies. Princeton also had a big turn around as it shot 21 strokes better in the second round, led by Greg Jarmas and Evan Harmeling who each shot four-over par 75’s.
The final round of the men's championship gets underway tomorrow with tee times set to begin at 8:30 a.m. The 2012 championship marks the second consecutive season the Ivy League Championship is being contested at Golloway National and the fourth time overall (2007 and 2008).
