Penn Wins 2012 Ivy League Men's Golf Championship on Third Playoff Hole
GALLOWAY, N.J. -- For the first time in the 38-year history of the Ivy League Men's Golf Championship, 54 holes were not enough to determine the League's team champion. After a Sunday charge by Penn, the Quakers and Dartmouth each had total team scores of 917. Then, on the third playoff hole, Penn's Max Marsico recorded a birdie that proved to be the difference as the Quakers won their third title in program history. In the end, while Marsico's birdie keyed the win, it was senior Scotty Williams whose last putt officially won it for the Quakers.
Dartmouth senior Peter Williamson turned in his third medalist performance at the Ivy league Championship, becoming just the second golfer in League history to be a three-time champion. he joins Yale's Bob Heintz - who has split time between the PGA and Nationwide Tours - also won three titles as he captured medalist honors from 1990-92. Williamson carded an even par 71 on the day to finish at even par 213 on the weekend.
Starting the day 16 shots off the lead, Penn junior P.J. Fielding's one-under par 70, including a birdie on the eighteenth, led the Quakers' move up the leaderboard. Marsico shot a two-over par 73, while Colin St. Maxens and Scotty Williams turned in 77's to round out the scoring at 297 on the day for Penn. Fielding placed fourth and Willaims fifth to claim first team All-Ivy honors.
Also for the second consecutive season, Williamson was voted the Player of the Year by the League's head coaches. Yale freshman Will Davenport was named the League's Rookie of the Year, also by a vote of the head coaches.
For the playoff, all five players from each team played hole 18, 17 and then 18 again. No advantage was gained by eaither team on the first two playoff holes (in five-count-four scoring), so the ten players played No. 18 for a third time today and the Quakers ultimately prevailed. The Penn Quakers along with Williamson will advance to NCAA Regional play. The field will be announced via webcast on Monday, May 7 at 9:00 p.m. (EST).
