PRINCETON, N.J. -- Brown and Yale survived the second weekend of tournament play in ECAC Hockey and have advanced to Friday's semifinal round at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.
Brown, seeded-seventh, won its second best-of-three series in as many weeks, upsetting second-seeded Rensselaer in three games. The Bears (15-13-6) won the opener, 3-1, before the home team came back to even the series with a 6-2 win on Saturday night. Brown jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Sunday and held on for a 3-2 win to advance. Rensselaer outshot Brown, 42-17, in the final game. But first-team All-Ivy selection Anthony Borrelli came up with 40 saves to seal the win.
Yale, seeded third, got goals from three different players and limited the opposition to 17 shots in a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence to sweep the series, 2-0. Tommy Fallen had a goal and an assist and Jeff Malcolm stopped everything that came his way, including six power plays, to earn the win in net. That's no small order considering St. Lawrence had one of the nation's best power plays – and Division I's leading goal scorer - heading into the weekend series. The Saints were held to just one goal in the two games as Yale (18-10-3) won the opener, 6-1.
Brown will face top-seeded Quinnipiac, which had its hands full with Cornell, but won late Sunday night in double overtime, 3-2, to win that series in three games. Brown will be making its first semifinal appearance since 2010. The two will meet Friday at 4 pm.
Yale will face fourth-seeded Union, which eliminated Dartmouth in two games. The Bulldogs are in the semifinals for the third time in the last five years. Yale and Union will play at 7:30 pm.
