BALTIMORE, Md. -- Two Ivy League men’s
lacrosse players were chosen in the 2011 Major League Lacrosse
(MLL) draft, which was held on Friday, Jan. 22 at the Power Plant.
Princeton attackman Jack McBride was the first Ivy
Leaguer off the board, as the Denver Outlaws took him in the fifth
round with the 27th overall pick. The Boston Cannons then selected
brown midfielder David Hawley in the seventh round
with the 40th overall pick.
The 2011 MLL Draft was held before the start of the forthcoming
NCAA season and only seniors with expiring eligibility were
eligible to be drafted. With the move, drafted players can directly
join their respective MLL teams following their senior seasons.
With the first overall pick in the 2011 draft, the Hamilton
Nationals selected Stony Brook’s Kevin
Crowley.
McBride will bring 89 career goals into his senior year, and he
figures to finish somewhere between third and fifth all-time at
Princeton in goals scored. A first-team All-Ivy selection each of
the last two years and the Ivy League Rookie of the Year as a
freshman, McBride has scored 35 goals each of the last two seasons.
As a junior he scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the
first Ivy League tournament final, and he also had two goals and
three assists against Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA
tournament. McBride was a second-team All-America as a sophomore,
an honorable mention All-America as a junior and a preseason
second-team All-America this year.
Last season Hawley played in 14 games for the Bears, including
four as a starter. He ended the year tied as Brown’s fourth
leading scorer with 27 goals and four assists for 31 points and
earned 2010 All-Ivy first team midfielder honors. His 27 goals tied
for the second-most on the team and included eight man-up goals and
a game-winning tally. Prior to last season, Hawley played at
Williams College where he led the Ephs in scoring in each of his
two seasons.
After the 2011 NCAA season, McBride and Hawley will look to join
the growing ranks of Ivy alums in the MLL. On Dec. 14, 2010 ten Ivy
Leaguers were selected in the MLL Supplemental Draft, led by
Ryan McClay of Cornell who was selected with the
sixth overall pick by Chesapeake.
