PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman forward Stephen Baker (Fairport, N.Y.) had an impressive opening weekend for Penn, leading the Quakers to a pair of victories and earning Ivy League Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors in the process. In his collegiate debut Baker scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as Penn downed Saint Joseph’s, 2-0. Baker opened his  goal scoring account in the 40th minute when he knocked a ball out of mid-air and past the opposing goalkeeper. Baker was dangerous on the attack all night, amassing 10 shots against the Hawks, including four on net.

In Penn’s 5-0 defeat of La Salle, Baker and his classmates missed the first half while attending a mandatory freshmen event at the University. In retrospect, the Explorers may consider themselves lucky that Baker could only suit up for the second half because he went on to score two goals and notch his first career assist in the final 45 minutes. His seven points in two games would have ranked him tied for fourth among all Penn players last season.

Baker is Penn’s first Ivy League Player of the Week since Loukas Tasigianis shared the honor on November 17, 2008 and he is Penn’s first Ivy League Rookie of the Week since Garon Smith earned the honor on Nov. 2, 2009.
