TOWSON, Md. -- Defender Nick Alers of the Yale Bulldogs men's soccer team was named to the Capital One Academic® All-America third team.
A sophomore from San Jose, Costa Rica, Alers was one of just three sophomores to be honored as a 2011 Capital One Academic® All-America selection, with all three of those sophomores earning third team honors. The economics and political science double major carries a 3.96 GPA.
Alers was also a 2011 All-Ivy first team selection. He started 16 games and was the anchor of a Yale defense that yielded only 16 goals and posted four shutouts on the year. His top performance may have come against Dartmouth when he held Ivy League Player of the Year Lucky Mkosana scoreless, limiting him to only two shots, in the Bulldogs' 2-0 victory. Alers was the first Yale player to earn All-Ivy first team recognition since Alex Munns and James Stewart in 2006.
