PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- In a thrilling game at Stevenson Field on Sunday night that needed more than the regulation 90 minutes to decide, it was Saint Mary's that came up with the golden goal in the 98th minute to advance past Brown, 3-2, in the third round of the 2011 NCAA Championship.
At the start of the match junior defender Dylan Remick (Inverness, Ill.) was fouled on a push in the eighth minute as he ran out towards the Gael's box. With ball down for a free kick, Brown nearly went up first, as SMC's goalie could not immediately control it, but eventually covered up to end the Bears' first big chance.
The first corner of the match came in the 11th minute and went Saint Mary's way. The kick was a perfect one, and Julian Godinez's header went just high above the crossbar.
The Gaels actually had the only four corners of the first half, but their second two were headed out by the Brown defense, ending any threat.
In the 23rd minute, senior forward Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) came up firing from 18-yards out, but Saint Mary's goalie Doug Herrick was able to get his hands on it, deflecting it down.
SMC's Trevor Newquist came up the first goal, as the fourth corner of the game in the 28th minute lead to a head in by the Gaels' defender. It was just his second goal of the season on only his seventh shot of the year.
Brown went on the attack immediately after, with Rosa making a break before he was fouled hard by Newquist, who picked up a yellow card on the booking, awarding the Bears a free ball. Rosa got a good look after the play in, but his shot went wide right.
Brown made four changes late in the first half, trying to get fresh legs onto the field in effort to find the equalizer.
TJ Popolizio (Rexford, N.Y.), who was one of the Bears subs, got a look in the 39th minute, but the attempt went high. With just 15 seconds left, freshman Ben Maurey (Dowington, Pa.) came up with a big blast on net, but once again Herrick was able to make a finger-tip deflection, helping the Gaels take a 1-0 lead into the half.
Brown got its first corner of the game in the 47th minute of the match. Senior Jay Hayward (Acton, Mass.) played it in, but sophomore Aidan Leonard (Cararillo, Calif.) had trouble getting a square header on the ball as it sailed high.
The equalizer came for the Bears in the 51st minute. A Gael foul just outside the SMC box led to a free kick by Hayward. The kick went through into box where Remick was able to redirect the pass and net his third goal of the season.
Just 10 minutes later, Taylor Gorman (Freeport, Maine) took control on a run-out and fed the perfect pass through two defenders to find foot of Rosa who one-timed the ball for a 2-1 Brown lead.
The Brown lead would not last however as a hand-ball led to a free kick for Saint Mary's from about 15 yards out. Jose Cabeza took the kick and perfectly placed it for Tom Mohoric to just get a small header on it to erase the Brown advantage.
With just over 5 minutes remaining in the match, Rosa displayed an unbelievable individual effort advance the ball into the box and set up a Brown header that went just high and wide.
Again, with just 90 seconds left it was Rosa with a chance to win it, as his attempt got past the goaltender, but the Gael defense came to Herrick's aid, stopping the ball just shy of the line and force overtime.
In OT, the Bears got a quick corner just a minute in. Junior Kevin Gavey (Fairfield, Conn.) took the kick and sent it long, but a foul erased any chance for Brown.
It was the Bears and Rosa again with near win in the fourth minute of overtime as the forward had an open look, which went just wide.
Despite all of the chances for Brown to start the overtime period, it was Saint Mary's that made the most of their as Newquist tallied his second goal of the game in the 98th minute to send the Gaels into the Quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship against No. 1-overall seed, North Carolina.
