PRINCETON, N.J. -- In the first full week of
Ivy League men’s soccer competition, the Ancient Eight faced
down tough non-conference opponents en route to seven wins on the
week. Cornell stands alone as the only unbeaten team remaining in
the League with a 4-0-0 record. No. 23 Brown went 2-1 on the week,
suffering its first loss of the 2012 campaign, a 1-0 setback to
Fordham.
In all, five of the eight Ivy teams recorded at least one win last
week. Columbia also went 1-1, as did Dartmouth and Harvard. The
Crimson handed Big Ten team Michigan State a 1-0 loss before
falling to SMU, 3-2 in double overtime. That same SMU squad
defeated Dartmouth, 2-1, two days prior to its win over
Harvard.
A number of big games are on the horizon for the Ivy League,
highlighted by Dartmouth’s trip to Albuquerque, N.M., to take
part in the New Mexico Tournament, where it will face the host
squad and No. 7 ranked Lobos on Friday. On that same day, Harvard
will host No. 4 UConn and Penn and Princeton will open the Ivy
League/BIG EAST Classic with Villanova and No. 12 Georgetown,
respectively. The Quakers and Tigers will swap opponents for
Sunday’s matches.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cornell junior Daniel Haber (Toronto) made sure
to hold on to the title of Ivy League Player of the Week, posting
seven points in two games to lead the Big Red to a 2-0-0 week.
After taking just two shots in his team’s 1-0 win over
Lafayette, Haber erupted in Cornell’s 4-0 win over Buffalo,
accounting for all four goals with three scores and one assist,
marking the first hat trick for a Big Red since Brian
Kuritzky accomplished the feat against IUPUI on Sept. 2,
2007.
The Big Red is 4-0-0 to start the season for the first time since
1996 due in no small part to the play of Haber, who leads the
League in points (14) and goals (six) and is tied for the lead in
assists (two). Cornell is the first school to earn consecutive
Player of the Week awards since Princeton saw Matt
Sanner and Benjamin Burton go
back-to-back on Nov. 1 and Nov. 8, 2010. Haber takes home his
fourth Player of the Week award in the past two years and becomes
the first individual to earn back-to-back Player of the Week honors
since Dartmouth’s Mark Limpert in 2004 (Nov.
1, Nov. 8).

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Columbia freshman goalkeeper Kyle Jackson’s
(Scottsdale, Ariz.) stepped on to the pitch for his first
collegiate appearance at the start of the second half of a
scoreless tie with Manhattan. Jackson went on to stop all six of
the shots he faced and the Lions scored twice to get their first
victory of the season and Jackson the first win of his career.
Jackson also started the second half of Columbia’s game
against Monmouth, and although the Lions fell short, losing 1-0,
Jackson helped to hold the Hawks scoreless over his 45 minutes of
action. He becomes the first Lion to earn Rookie of the Week since
David Najem received the award on Nov. 8,
2010.
