PRINCETON, N.J. -- Brown handed Cornell its
first loss of the season and the race for the Ivy League men's
soccer title got a little bit tighter last weekend as the top half
of the league is separated by just two points.
Brown, ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA Top 25 last week, began its week
with a 1-0 win out of conference at Boston College. The Bears
returned home to knock Cornell from the ranks of the unbeaten,
snapping the Big Red's 12-match winning streak with a 2-0 win. That
pushed Brown (3-0-1) to the stop of the standings with 10 points,
one better than Cornell and Dartmouth, which kept pace with a 2-1
win over Columbia on Saturday. The Big Green scored twice early and
then withstood a late charge by the host Lions to move to 3-1-0 in
League play this season.
Princeton remained unbeaten in the League (2-0-2) and sits two
points behind in the standings after a 2-1 double-overtime win over
Harvard on Saturday. Alex Wetterman scored the
golden goal 1:42 into the second overtime session. The Tigers
travel to Cornell on Saturday for a 3 pm match in what amounts to a
must-win for both teams to keep pace in the league race.
Sam Kernan-Schloss logged four saves in the Brown
shutout of Cornell and dropped his league-best goals against
average to a mere 0.48. The Bears got an early goal from
Ben Maurey just 4:34 into the match and added an
insurance marker late on an own goal. Cornell was the last unbeaten
/ untied team in the nation entering the match. The Big Red, ranked
No. 10 in the NSCAA poll before the loss, had scored three of more
goals in seven-straight matches before being shutout on Saturday
and had the No. 1 ranked offense in Division I, averaging 2.92
goals per match.
Maurey also had the gamewinner in the impressive non-conference
win at Boston College on Tuesday, the tally coming with just 3:47
left in regulation. The Bears have allowed just three goals in
their last seven matches and are unbeaten in their last 10
(8-0-2).
Yale overcame its recent scoring woes to down Penn, 2-1, on
Saturday. The Bulldogs, who had been shutout in five straight
matches, scored twice in the final 22 minutes to overcome a 1-0
deficit and earn their first League win of the year. Peter
Jacobson scored the gamewinner with 2:12 left in
regulation.
Five of the Ancient Eight were ranked in the Top 100 in the latest
NCAA RPI last week, including three in the Top 40. Cornell came in
at No. 29, while Princeton was No. 36 and Brown was No. 37.
All eight teams have off from non-league play this week and only
have Ivy matches on their slate on Saturday.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brown's Ben Maurey (Downington, Pa.) earned
Ivy League Player of the Week honors with gamewinning goals in both
of Brown's wins last week to help the Bears run their unbeaten
streak to 10 straight. Maurey scored the only goal of the match to
lift Brown past Boston College, 1-0, on Tuesday. He then followed
that up with an early tally to set the tone in Brown's 2-0 win over
previously unbeaten Cornell, snapping Cornell's 12-match unbeaten
streak.
Maurey had tallied just one goal in his first 11 matches before
his two markers last week. But he has made all three count this
season as they have all been gamewinners. He now has eight points
on the year (3g, 2a).
Brown, 8-0-2 in their last 10 matches, sits atop the league
standings with 10 points and a 3-0-1 mark.
