Men's Soccer Squads Ready for Openers
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League men's soccer teams take to the pitch in non-League competition this weekend to open the 59th season of action in the Ancient Eight.
Seven of the eight teams will open play on Friday night, with four matches being streamed on The Ivy League® Digital Network. Yale is the first team to play on Friday, visiting Fordham for a 5 pm match. Three games get underway at 7 pm with Harvard hosting Iona, No. 20-ranked Brown hosting Bryant and Princeton visiting Fairleigh Dickinson. At 7:30 pm, defending Ivy League champion Cornell faces Detroit in Oneonta, N.Y., while Columbia visits No. 2-ranked Creighton at 8:30 pm (ET). Penn will host Stony Brook at approximately 9 pm, closing out the Friday slate.
Dartmouth opens the season Saturday under new head coach Chad Riley, hosting Holy Cross at 7 pm.
Sunday sees Columbia visiting Nebraska-Omaha, Harvard hosting Davidson, Penn hosting Sacred Heart, Cornell taking on Hartwick and Brown facing Providence.
Cornell, which received 43 votes in the Top 25 poll this past week, will look to defend its 2012 Ivy League title without last year's leading scorer and Ivy League Player of the Year Daniel Haber, who went to Israel to play professionally. With 13 newcombers, the Big Red will look to senior defender Patrick Slogic (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who is on the MAC Hermann Watch List and is a candidate for the Senior CLASS award, to lead the way.
Brown, ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA's preseason poll and No. 20 this week, returns 17 letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's team that earned an at-large to the NCAA Championship and advanced to the second round. The NCAA bid was Brown's seventh in the last eight years. Junior Ben Maurey (Downingtown, Pa.) returns after earning first-team All-Ivy honors last year, leading the Bears with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Brown will have to replace graduated goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss, who was a big part of the Bears' 11 shutouts last season.
Six of this weekend's 13 matches are available on The Ivy League® Digital Network.
