Men's Squash All-Ivy, Postseason Awards Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Columbia’s Osama Khalifa and Harvard’s Saadeldin Abouaish received the Ivy League men’s squash postseason awards following a vote of the Ancient Eight head coaches.

Harvard’s Mike Way was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year, Columbia junior Osama Khalifa was selected as the Player of the Year and Harvard freshman Saadeldin Abouaish was unanimously tabbed as the Rookie of the Year.

Khalifa posted a 15-1 mark at the No. 1 position for the Lions, with his lone loss coming to Harvard’s Abouaish (9-11, 5-11, 1-11) in Ivy League play. Behind Khalifa’s 6-1 record in Ivy League competition, the Lions finished as the League runner-up at 6-1 and posted a 12-4 overall mark as the fourth-place finisher at the College Squash Association (CSA) National Team Championships. A product of Cairo, Egypt, Khalifa went on to claim the CSA Individual National Championship and Pool Trophy with an 11-1, 11-6, 11-5 win over Rochester’s Mario Yanez. He is Columbia’s first-ever national champion.

Abouaish went 10-5 on the year at the No. 1 position for the Crimson, including a 6-1 mark in Ivy League play. The Cairo, Egypt, native helped Harvard to the Potter Cup final, where the Crimson finished as the CSA National Team Championships runner-up. He also competed in the CSA Individual National Championship’s Pool Trophy bracket, falling in the quarterfinals to St. Lawrence’s Ahmed Bayoumy.

Way guided the No. 2-ranked Crimson to a 13-2 record and a runner-up finish at the CSA National Team Championships this season. His Crimson also went 7-0 en route to their first Ivy League title since 2014-15. The Ivy crown is Harvard’s 41st all-time and the fourth during Way’s tenure (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017).

Khalifa and Abouaish were 2-of-5 unanimous First Team All-Ivy selections, joining Columbia senior Rishi Tandon (West Bengal, India), Penn junior Marwan Mahmoud (Alexandria, Egypt) and Yale freshman Spencer Lovejoy (Branford, Conn.).

Ivy League champion Harvard claimed 4-of-11 First Team All-Ivy slots, with junior Bradley Smith (Lancashire, England), junior Madhav Dhingra (Delhi, India) and freshman Timothy Brownell (Belmont, Mass.) earning recognition alongside Abouaish.
