PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former Brown men’s
tennis standouts Jamie Cerretani and Adil
Shamasdin competed in Gentlemen’s Doubles at
2011 with Cerretani reaching the quarterfinals and Shamasdin making
it to the second round.
Currently ranked No. 71 in the world in doubles action,
Cerretani and his partner, Philipp Marx (Germany),
won their first three matches, en route to the quarterfinals. The
duo's Wimbledon run ended in the quarters to sixth-seeded
Michael Llodra (France) and Nenad
Zimonjic (Serbia), 6-7 (7-3), 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
Cerretani holds the Bears’ career doubles win record with 120
victories.
It marked the fourth straight year Cerretani has competed at
Wimbledon and is the farthest he has advanced in any Grand Slam
event. After losing in the second round at Wimbledon in 2008,
Cerretani was eliminated in the first round in both 2009 and
2010.
The duo opened the Championships with a win 6-4, 6-1 win over
Thailand’s Sanchai Ratiwatana and
Sonchat Ratiwatana in the first round. The second
round saw Cerretani and Marx displace 16th-seeded Daniele Bracciali
(Italy) and Frantisek Cermak (Czech Republic) in
four sets (4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4).
The third round match between Cerretani and Marx and the Columbian
duo of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert
Farah was scheduled for Monday, June 27, but was moved to
Tuesday, June 28, after getting cancelled on Monday.
After falling behind, 6-3, following the first set, the match was
suspended due to weather. However, Cerretani and Marx stormed back
after the delay and won the next three sets, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-4 to
move onto the quarterfinal match.
Adil Shamasdin, who was Cerretani’s doubles partner for
three years at Brown, went 1-1 in his first career appearance at
Wimbledon. Having played in two other Grand Slam events, this marks
the first time Shamasdin has advanced out of the first round.
Currently ranked No. 68 in the world in doubles and partnering
with Chris Cuccione (Australia), the duo upset
10th-seeded Mark Knowles (Bahamas) and
Lukasz Kobot (Poland) in the first round (1-6, 7-6
(7-5), 6-4). The duo lost a hard-fought three-set match in the
second round on Monday, falling to Carsten Ball
(Australia) and Santiago Gonzalez (Mexico), 7-6
(7-4), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Earlier this year, Cerretani and Shamasdin combined to win their first ATP World Tour team title in Johannesburg, South Africa at the SA Tennis Open. The duo battled past top seeds Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, to earn the title.
