PRINCETON, N.J. -- The temperature outside may read winter but the schedule says spring for Ivy League men's tennis with four teams taking to the courts for the first time Jan. 22-23 during the spring segment of the 2010-11 schedule.
Brown, Columbia and Cornell are in action in dual match play while Harvard hosts its winter classic, welcoming George Washington and Marist to the Murr Center Tennis Courts for an opportunity to pick up some early-season individual matches before heading into dual play next week.
Next weekend, Columbia and Cornell will be participating in the ITA Division I Kickoff Weekend Jan. 28-31, which will take place at 15 sites across the country. Columbia faces host Louisville while Cornell takes on host and top-ranked Virigina. The losers of the opening matches will play a consolation match while the winners will play a championship match the next day. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the Feb. 18-21 ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Boar's Head Sports Club hosted by Virginia.
Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale are also in action next weekend with Dartmouth being the only Ivy not at home, traveling to Chicago to face DePaul and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Entering the spring schedule, Cornell senior Andy Gauthier is the only Ivy League player ranked in singles at No. 80 in the Jan. 4 ITA rankings. The League has three doubles teams ranked in Harvard's Alistair Felton and Andy Nguyen (46th) and Jonathan Pearlman and Christo Schultz (50th) and Dartmouth's Curtis Roby and Cameron Ghorbani (58th).
