Cornell Captures ECAC Men's Tennis Indoor Title

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell kept its winning ways
going in capturing the 2013 ECAC Men's Tennis Indoor Championship
with a 4-0 victory over second-seeded and 42nd ranked Columbia.
Cornell swept the three doubles matches and took home the first
three finished singles matches to claim a 4-0 win over No. 42
Columbia on Sunday afternoon at Reis Tennis Center in the finals of
the ECAC Indoor Tennis Championships. The Big Red, ranked No. 73
overall, improved to 7-1 in dual matches and won the prestigious
regional tournament for the second time in the last three
years.
After toppling Ivy foes Brown and top-seeded Harvard on the first
two days of competition, the Big Red blanked the second-seeded
Lions. It also won the 2010-11 tourney with victories over
Columbia, Harvard and Binghamton in Cambridge, Mass.
Cornell won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles by identical 8-4 scores to
take the doubles point, with the Big Red sweeping the matches with
a tiebreak 8-7(2) victory at No. 2. With one point in its pocket,
Cornell was able to win relatively easy decisions at No. 2-4
singles, with Sam Fleck taking a 6-0, 6-0
decision at No. 2.
The Big Red sealed the three-day run with 6-2, 6-3 wins by
Alex Sidney at No. 3 and a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No.
4 by Quoc-Daniel Nguyen. When competition was
completed, the Big Red was tied on two additional courts and
trailed on the third.
In capturing the tournament title, the Big Red had to defeat the
No. 1 (Harvard), No. 2 (Columbia) and No. 5 (Brown) seeds, as well
as three nationally ranked squads, in three days. Brown entered the
week No. 61, Harvard ws No. 47 and Columbia was No. 42 in the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Cornell entered the
weekend ranked 73rd nationally.
