PRINCETON, N.J. -- This weekend starts another big tournament on the Ivy League men's tennis calendar as all eight teams head to the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn. for the 2012 United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships.
Yale will host more than 100 players from schools in the Northeast for the five-day event.
Singles qualifying matches for this weekend's USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships begin on Thursday at 8 a.m. The unseeded main draw players in both singles and doubles open play Friday with the seeded singles players and doubles teams in action on Saturday.
The regional tournaments determine which players head to Flushing, N.Y., for the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Tennis Center.
The ITA Regional Championships, currently sponsored by the USTA, date back to 1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex Regional Championships. The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools will participate in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
