Fall Slate Slows for Men's Tennis

PRINCETON, N.J. -- A busy start for Ivy League
men's tennis slows down a bit this weekend as Columbia is the only
school with players competing in the Saint Francis Intercollegiate
Tennis Association Men's All-American Championships being held
Sept. 28-Oct. 6 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa,
The Lions have four players participating with junior Winston Lin and sophomore Dragos Ignat in the singles main draw and juniors Ashok Narayana and Max Schur in the doubles main draw, which begin on Thursday, Oct. 3. The singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships slated for Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y.
Narayana and Schur are also in the 64-player qualifying singles bracket, which begins on Monday, Sept. 30. A singles player or doubles tandem in this bracket must win three consecutive matches to stay alive and move into the main draw. Eight spots in the singles main draw are reserved for qualifiers, while the doubles main draw will feature four teams from qualifying.
Other Ivies in action this weekend include Penn hosting Brown, Buffalo, Norfolk State, St. John's, St. Joseph's, St. Peter's, and Temple in the Second Annual Penn Invitational and Princeton traveling to Annapolis, Md. to take part in the Navy National All-Conference Invitational.
Sophomore Lucas Da Silveira and freshman Eli Whittle made it to the doubles C draw final and Da Silveira made it to the singles C draw semifinals at the Ivy Plus Tournament (Sept. 20-22). Da Silveira won twice at the Brown Invitational (Sept. 13-15), capturing the Yellow singles title and the Gray doubles title with junior Justin To. Whittle and junior Daniel Hirschberg also won their respective singles flights at the Bears' host tournament.

The Lions have started the fall strong taking away title in both tournaments so far this fall. Lin won the singles A final at the Ivy Plus Tournament (Sept. 20-22) and the A flight doubles title with freshman Miguel Alda at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational (Sept. 13-15). Ignat won twice at Princeton, capturing the singles A flight and doubles B flight with junior Bert Vancura.

The Big Red tandem of junior Alex Sidney and freshman Bernardo Casares Rosa won the doubles B draw title at the Ivy Plus Tournament (Sept. 20-22). Freshman Chris Vrabel grabbed the singles title in the Pagoda Draw at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational (Sept. 13-15).

The Big Green won two singles flights at the Ivy Plus Tournament (Sept. 20-22) in its only tournament so far this fall. Junior Sam Todd defeated Penn's Marshall Sharp in the E final and freshman George Wall defeated Penn's Zach Lesson in the F final.

Junior Denis Nguyen and senior Casey MacMaster have teamed up to win doubles titles in the Crimson's two tournaments so far this season. The duo went 3-0 to win as the host of the Harvard Chowder Fest (Sept. 13-15) and then grabbed the A draw doubles final at the Ivy Plus Tournament (Sept. 20-22) over St. John's Erick Eyes and R.J. Del Nunzio. In singles play at the Ivy Plus, freshman Sebastin Beltrame won the C draw final over Cornell's Colin Sinclair and sophomore Kelvin Lam won the D bracket over Columbia's Max Schur, while junior Shaun Chaudhuri lost to Columbia's Lin in A draw final.

Freshman Matt Nardella has highlighted the Quakers' strong fall start with a doubles win with senior Nikola Kocovic in the C flight final at the Ivy Plus Tournament (Sept. 20-22). Nardella went 3-1 in his first collegiate tournament, Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational (Sept. 13-15), with a loss in the Nassau singles final to St. John's Gary Kushnikovich.

The Tigers made three finals appearances in the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational (Sept. 13-15) -- Senior Dan Davies and junior Zack McCourt took Columbia's Lin and Alda to a tiebreak in the top doubles draw final but came up short, freshman Josh Yablon retired in the first set of his single final due to injury and and freshman Tom Colautti lost in straight sets.

Freshman Tyler Lu, playing in just his second collegiate event, won the singles B draw final over Harvard's Brian Yeung at the Ivy Plus Tournament (Sept. 20-22). Fellow rookie Photos Photiades recorded a solid win over Dartmouth's Brandon DeBot in the singles C draw consolation final. At the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational (Sept. 13-15), freshman Alex Hagermoser shined with three straight wins in his first collegiate tournament. Hagermoser advanced to semifinals of the singles bracket's main draw before falling to Columbia's Richard Pham.
