Halim, Carlin Reign Supreme

Saturday, May 31, 2008

Cornell's Muhammad Halim and Penn's Jesse Carlin each claimed NCAA East Regional titles in Tallahassee, Fla., as a contingent of 10 Ivy Leaguers qualified for the NCAA Championships to be held in Des Moines, Iowa, in two weeks.

Halim successfully defended his regional title in the triple jump to highlight the second and final day of action, becoming one of four Cornellians to clinch a berth to the Championships. Halim's longest leap of the day — a wind-aided 54-5 1/2 — was more than a foot-and-a-half longer than the nearest competitor.

Carlin took care of business by winning the 800-meter run in 2:05.89. She has been particularly steady all year long, consistently clocking times around 2:06. Yale's Kate Grace just missed qualifying in that event, finishing less than two-tenths of a second out of fifth place.

Big Red jumping star junior Jeomi Maduka qualified for the NCAAs for the second straight day by taking third in the long jump with a windy 44-2. She had qualified in the long jump on Friday.

Cornell senior Adam Seabrook was fifth in the 400m hurdles following a photo finish. Seabrook was edged out at the finish by Florida State senior Elliott Wood, finishing two-thousandths of a second back. Seabrook's time of 50.33 was officially recorded as the same as Wood's, and was still good enough to break the Cornell mark of 51.04, set earlier this season by teammate Aaron Merrill. It was also the best time by an Ivy Leaguer since 1996 when Princeton's Andy Collins ran 50.17.

Three other Ivy Leaguers — Yale junior discus thrower Jeff Lachman (174-4), Harvard junior high jumper Becky Christensen (5-11 1/4) and Bron freshman shot putter Brynn Smith (51-10) — qualified on Saturday.
