Cross Country Recap - Week 2
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The second weekend of racing for the Ivy League cross country teams was a successful one across the board, headlined by Brown, Columbia, Harvard and Penn competing at the 16th Annual Iona Meet of Champions at Van Courtlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
On the men's side, the Quakers earned the top team finish from the Ivy League, placing second with 108 points behind La Salle (98 points). All four Ivy squads placed in the top 10 with Brown finishing fourth, Harvard in fifth and Columbia in eighth.
The Bears' junior Matt Duffy placed second overall in the 8k, crossing the finishline in 25.11. Other top placewinners across the Ivy League were Penn's senior duo of Phil Cawkwell (6th, 25.24) and Chris Baird (7th, 25:25), Columbia's senior Dustin Martin (8th, 25:27) and Harvard's freshman Maksin Korolev (11th, 25.31).
In the women's 6k race, Brown took runner-up team status, just two points behind champion Kentucky. The Bears' freshman Margaret Connelly raced to a third-place individual finish in 22:07. Fellow Bear Elaine Kuckertz placed fourth overall in 22:11.
Penn's women placed fourth overall and were led by sophomore Leslie Kovach was second overall in 21:55. Columbia placed fifth in the team standings and also had one top-10 individual – sophomore Noelle Van Rysselberghe – who placed eighth in 22:23. Harvard's women rounded things out with a 13th-place team finish.
In other action, Yale sent a select number of runners to the Quinnipiac Invitational. For the Bulldog men, senior Chris Scavone won the 8k race in 26.23 and freshman Michael Cunetta was second in 26:50. On the women's side, freshman Clare Kane was the Bulldog's top performer, placing ninth in 19:12 (6k).
Cornell's women rounded out Ivy teams in action last week, taking a runner-up team finish at the Colgate Invitational. Sophomore Katie Kellner placed seventh in 21:55 and freshman Devin McMahon was close behind, taking eighth in 21:9.
