Men's Cross Country Kicks Off 2013 Campaign
PRINCETON, N.J. -- All eight Ivy League cross
country teams kick off their 2013 seasons this weekend as they look
to build on an impressive 2012 campaign.
On Friday, Cornell hosts Army and Syracuse, while Penn takes part in the Big 5 Meet. The following day, Brown will run in the Dartmouth Invitational, Columbia will compete in the Stony Brook Invitational, Yale will race against Harvard and Princeton will participate in the Delaware Blue Hen Invitational.
Last season, Columbia and Princeton each set program records by finishing 17th and 11th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, respectively. The Tigers, ranked No. 10 in the country in the USTFCCCA preseason poll, return seniors Chris Bendtsen and Alejandro Arroyo Yamin, who placed 43rd and 58th, respectively, at NCAAs.
Bendtsen also looks to defend his Ivy League Heptagonal individual title. In fact, Princeton returns a trio of 2012 USTFCCCA All-Region performers in Bendtsen, Arroyo Yamin and fellow classmate Tyler Udland. Those three took three of the top four spots at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship to help Princeton to its third-straight title and sixth in the last seven years.
The Lions, meanwhile, are ranked No. 18 in the USTFCCCA preseason poll and bring back senior Jake Sienko, who took 74th at the NCAA Championship and also earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors.
Dartmouth comes in at No. 29 nationally. Big Green junior Will Geoghegan is back, as is Yale junior Matt Nussbaum. Both runners earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors and placed in the top-10 at Heps in 2012. Harvard seniors Maksim Korolev and James Leakos also earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors last season. The Crimson is in the receiving votes category of the USTFCCCA preseason poll.
For Penn, sophomores Brendan Smith, Thomas Awad and Brandon Clark hope to improve upon their top-40 finishes at the 2012 Ivy League Championship, while Brown will be led by senior Brendan Boyle, sophomore Ned Willig and junior Mark McGurrin.
The 2013 Ivy League Heptagonal Championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Princeton’s West Windsor Fields.
