PRINCETON, N.J. -- As Ivy League softball teams prepared to do battle for the opening weekend of League play, it was Mother Nature that won out for the most part this past weekend.
Weekend rains played havoc with the schedule of games. It wasn't until Monday evening that a slate of games scheduled for Friday and Saturday was somewhat completed. Harvard wasn't able to play either of its slated doubleheaders at Cornell and Princeton. The Crimson and Tigers had the first game of their twinbill suspended in the fourth inning.
New dates for those two doubleheaders and the Brown-Penn twinbill that was washed out have not yet been announced.
Cornell and Dartmouth beat the elements to get their twinbill in and Dartmouth and Princeton had to wait until Monday to get their games completed, but finally did so under better conditions. The Big Green (14-13) swept all four games to take an early lead atop the North Division standings.
Columbia is out to its first-ever 4-0 start in Ivy play after sweeping Brown and Yale. The Lions (13-9) have won a school-record nine in a row and 12 of their last 13, sitting atop the South Division. As a team, the Lions are hitting .303. Emily Snodgrass and Kayla Shimoda are Nos. 2 and 3 in the Ivy League in hitting, batting at a .365 and .362 clip, respectively. Shelby Unger is fifth in the League at .350. Impressively, there are 13 hitters in the League batting .333 or better and Columbia has six of them.
During the current winning streak, Unger is hitting .481, while Alyssa Rodia is hitting .440 with 11 runs scored.
Dartmouth's Kelsey Miller continues to lead the League in hitting at .405. She has a League-high 30 hits on the season and also has drawn 11 walks for a League-best .488 on-base percentage.
Several games can be viewed and heard on The Ivy League Digital Network again this weekend. Among those games will be Friday afternoon's doubleheader between division leaders Dartmouth and Columbia. A broadcast list is available in the weekly schedule below.
