CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- For the fourth time in five years, the Harvard women's basketball team saw its name included in the 64-team field for the WNIT as it was paired against Hartford in the tournament's first round. The Crimson and Hawks will meet Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m.
Harvard earned the Ivy League's automatic bid to the WNIT by placing second in the regular season standings with an overall record of 20-8 and an 11-3 mark in Ancient Eight play. The Crimson also posted its first undefeated season at home since 1997-98 with an 11-0 record at Lavietes Pavilion, and had three players named to the All-Ivy League teams.
This year's trip to the WNIT will mark the team's fourth appearance in the tournament in five years, and the program's 10th postseason appearance overall. Harvard has competed in six NCAA Tournaments, and in 1998 became the only No. 16 seed to upset a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament on either the men's and women's side when it defeated Stanford, 71-67.
The Crimson made history against last season as the first member of the Ivy League to register a win in the WNIT. Harvard defeated Hofstra on its home court, 73-71, and nearly pulled off the upset in the second round with a 64-59 loss at Temple.
Harvard leads the all-time series with Hartford 5-4 but lost to the Hawks last season in Hartford, 72-61. Thursday's game will mark the third straight year the regional rivals have met with the Crimson earning an 85-61 victory in during the 2010-11 season. Harvard is 2-2 all-time on the road in Hartford.
