Former Ivies Win Medals at 2010 World Rowing Championships

LAKE KARAPIRO, New Zealand -- Five former Ivy League rowers were a part of medal-winning performances at 2010 World Rowing Championships in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.

Radcliffe's Esther Lofgren and Yale's Jamie Redman and Taylor Ritzel were in the United States' women's eight boat that captured a fifth-straight world title. The U.S. eight took the lead by the first quarter buoy after a rough start and rowing through first 200 meters fighting in the pack. The U.S. pushed into open water, finishing nearly four seconds ahead (6:12.42) of second-place Canada with a time of 6:12.42. Fellow Eli Ashley Brzozowicz was a member of the Canadian boat that took the silver medal.

Penn's Susan Francia teammed with Erin Cafaro, who rowed collegiately at California, grabbed bronze in the women's pair. The two were the defending world champion but was in fifth place crossing into the last quarter of the race. The duo pulled together a gigantic sprint to capture the bronze in a time of 7:22.46. New Zealand (7:17.12) won gold and Great Britain (7:20.24) took silver.

The U.S. totaled four medals in the competition, adding a silver in the women's lightweight quadruple sculls and a bronze in the women's four.
