NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Ivy League Round-Robins got off to an exciting start on Saturday, with Princeton and Columbia finishing the day atop the standings with 3-0 records.
In round one, Harvard edged Penn 14-13 action. Senior Caroline Vloka led the way with three sabre wins for the Crimson. In one of round one's more dramatic bouts, Penn freshman Sarah Parmacek downed 2011 NCAA individual foil champion Alexandra Kiefer, 5-4 in overtime.
Round two saw Princeton join the fray after a bye in round one as the Tiger women edged the Quakers 16-11 in a match that was decided by Princeton's 8-1 record in sabre.
In the third round, Harvard turned in a 21-6 win over Yale to run its record to 2-0 on the day, while the other four teams found themselves in tightly contested matches. In the end, Brown edged Cornell, 14-13, and Columbia defeated Penn, 15-12.
With the win, the Lions ended their day with a 3-0 mark and the knowledge that they would share the lead heading into Sunday's final rounds. Columbia went unbeaten on the day largely in part due to the sabre squad that posted a combined 24-3 record as senior Sammy Roberts as well as the twin tandem of Essane Diedro and Loweye Diedro each went 8-1 on the day.
In the fourth round, Princeton outlasted Harvard to claim an 18-9 win and tie Columbia at 3-0 on the day. Sophomore foilist Eve Levin scored the clinching win when she downed Shelby MacLeod, 5-2.
Also in round four, Yale defeated Cornell, 16-11, and Penn downed Brown, 19-8. The win put Yale into a tie for third, while Penn moved into a tie for fifth with its first win of the day.
Looking at the individual results, Princeton junior Eliza Stone truned in a flawless 9-0 day in sabre, while her teammate Joanna Cichomski matched the Columbia sabre trio with an 8-1 mark. In foil, three different schools are represented in the top-three spots as Tiger freshman Ambika Singh carries an 8-1 mark into day two and Brown sophomore Kathryn Hawrot and Penn freshman Luona Wang each posted 9-2 on the day. In epee, the Princeton duo of freshman Katharine Holmes and junior Hannah Safford finished the day at 8-1 and 7-2, respectively.
The 2012 Ivy League Round-Robins will conclude tomorrow with rounds five, six and seven. In round five, which is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m., Yale will fence Princeton, Columbia will take on Harvard and Cornell will square off against Penn.
