PRINCETON -- The championship portion of the women’s fencing schedule began in earnest last weekend and Ivy teams turned in several wins against strong opposition, led by Columbia and Harvard toppling top-ranked Penn State at the St. John’s Super Cup, by identical scores of 14-13.
Also at the St. John’s Super Cup, which featured five of the nation’s top-seven ranked teams, Columbia also downed seventh-ranked Harvard (15-12), while the Crimson edged fifth-ranked St. John’s (14-13).
A day later at the NYU Invitational, the Lions continued to make noise, taking out fourth-ranked Northwestern (14-13) as well as defending NCAA Champion and third-ranked Notre Dame (15-12). Elsewhere, ninth-ranked Penn went 4-1 at its Philadelphia Invitational and Cornell posted a 3-3 mark at the same event.
The 2012 Ivy League Round-Robins will be contested at Yale on Feb. 11-12. The road to the NCAA Championships then begins on March 10 and 11 with the NCAA Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast Regionals. The four-day NCAA Championships will then be contested on March 22-25 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio State serving as the host.
The Bears, who are receiving votes in the latest CollegeFencing360.com Coaches Poll (Jan. 18), return to the strips on Jan. 28 at the NFC No. 2, which will be hosted by Boston College.
The Lions, who are receiving votes in the CollegeFencing360.com Coaches Poll, went 2-3 at the St. John’s Super Cup on Jan. 21 and followed with a 3-2 showing at the NYU Invitational on Jan. 22 … at the St. John’s Super Cup, Columbia edged top-ranked Penn State (14-13) and seventh-ranked Harvard (15-12) but fell to fifth-ranked St. John’s (19-8), sixth-ranked Ohio State (14-13) and third-ranked Notre Dame (20-7) … the Lions’ epee squad led the way versus Harvard with a 6-3 mark … in the win over the Nittany Lions, senior Sammy Roberts turned in a 3-0 mark in sabre to lead the team … at the NYU Invitational, the Lions downed fourth-ranked Northwestern (14-13), Notre Dame (15-12) and Wayne State (21-6), while losing to Ohio State (14-13) and St. John’s (18-9) … junior Loweye Diedro posted an impressive 12-3 mark on the day in sabre … Columbia next faces Vassar, Sacred Heart and NYU on Feb. 8 as part of The Historical Meet Plus.

The second-ranked Tigers are back in action on Feb. 4-5 when they travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Duals.
The Bulldogs, who are receiving votes in the CollegeFencing360.com Coaches Poll, posted a 1-4 record at the NYU Invitational on Jan. 22 … Yale’s win came against Wayne State (17-1) … the Bulldogs lost to third-ranked Notre Dame (22-5), fourth-ranked Northwestern (22-5), NYU (14-13) and sixth-ranked Ohio State (20-7) … the Bulldogs fence next in a home dual versus Sacred Heart on Jan. 28.
