PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Princeton and Columbia are unbeaten after the first day of action at the 2014 Ivy League Women's Fencing Round-Robin.
The Tigers and Lions are on pace for a showdown in the final round on Sunday. Princeton, the No. 1-ranked team in the USFCA poll, ran their dual match winning streak to 45 straight with wins over Cornell, Harvard, Yale and Brown. Harvard gave the Tigers their greatest challenge of the day, winning seven of the nine saber bouts. But Princeton took seven foil bouts and six in epee to claim the win.
Columbia had a scare of its own early on, edging Penn 14-13. The Lions then beat Brown and Cornell to close out the day.
Sara Taffel, Jackie Dubrovich and Margaret Lu went a combined 24-2 in foil for Columbia, which is ranked No. 5 in this week's poll.
Katharine Holmes went 10-1 for Princeton in epee, while Diamond Wheeler went 10-2 in saber.
Harvard's saber trio of Adrienne Jarocki, Aliya Itzkowitz and Kara Lee combined to go 25-2 for the Crimson on Saturday. The third-ranked Crimson women are third in the women's team standings at 2-1 and open Sunday's action against Columbia.
Sunday's action gets underway at 10 am.
