Women's Golf: March Recap

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Ivy League women's golf teams returned from their winter breaks by playing in several March tournaments. The season will hit its stride in April as the teams march toward the 2011 Ivy League Championships, which will be played on April 22-24 at the Atlantic City Country Club, Northfield, N.J.
A quick look at the national rankings according to golfstat shows several the Ivy individuals are putting together great seasons. In the most recent individual rankings (released on March 29), Yale's Seo Hee Moon is the top-ranked freshman in the nation and the sixth ranked player overall with a 71.53 stroke average. At number 71, Penn sophomore Isabel Han has a 73.39 stroke average. Princeton freshman Kelly Shon sits at 87th (73.71) and Harvard's Bonnie Hu ranks 101st (74.54). In the golftstat team rankings, Yale leads the way at 57th.
Brown
The Bears returned from break with a busy stretch of nine days in which they played in both the Low Country Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., and at the Lady Otter Spring Invitational in Seaside, Calif. At the Low Country Intercollegiate, the Bears placed 11th overall in the 14-team field with a 675 (346-329). Then at the Lady Otter Spring Invitational, Brown finished eighth in the 22-team field after shooting a 636 (320-316). Junior Megan Tuohy finished with a 152 (79-73), tying for 11th in the 114-player field.
The Bears will play host to the Brown Invitational on April 10 and 11 at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I., before taking part in the Ivy League Championship.
Columbia
The Lions returned to competition when they played in the Paradise Desert Classic at Luana Hills in Kailua, Hawaii on March 16. Columbia finished third out of the five teams in the event by shooting a 341. Freshman Michelle Piyapattra tied for medalist honors with Arizona State's Giulia Molinaro as each fired three-over par 75's.
Before playing in the Ivy League Championship, Columbia will play in the Hoya Invitational on April 4 and 5 and play host to the ROAR-EE Invitational on April 15 and 16 in Suffern, N.Y. at the Spook Rock Golf Course.
Dartmouth
The Big Green opened its spring slate at the Siena Invitational in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on March 18 and 19. At the eight-team tournament, Dartmouth finished sixth, led by Sarah Knapp. Knapp tied for ninth by shooting a 158 (84-74). Dartmouth's spring season continued at the Hilton Head Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C., on March 24 and 25, where it downed USC-Beaufort in a dual match, 327-338.
The Brown Invitational on April 10 and 11 will serve as the Big Green's final tune-up before the 2011 Ivy League Championship.
Harvard
The Crimson returned from break to play a pair of dual matches. Harvard came out on the wrong end of a 289-315 decision with Cal on March 27 and then dropped a 305-313 decision to Rollins on March 26.
The Crimson return to tournament play on April 4, when it tees it up at the Hoya Invitational. Then Harvard will play in the Brown Invitational before heading to the Ivy League Championship.
Penn
The Quakers returned to the course on March 19 and 20 to take part in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, 36-hole tournament that included 20 teams. Penn carded a 625 (315-310) to tie for third. Individually, sophomore Isabel Han (7576-151) and freshman Michelle Lee (74-77-151) tied for fifth place to lead the Quakers.
Penn will play in the Hoya Invitational and the Roar-EE Invitational before heading to Atlantic City for the 2011 Ivy League Championship.
Princeton
The Tigers returned from their winter lay-off to take part in the Administaff Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., where they finished 13th out of 17 teams. Princeton finished with a score of +57, led by freshman Kelly Shon's nine-over par 225 (80-74-71), which placed her in a tie for 20th.
Princeton will play in the Hoya Invitational and the Brown Bear Invitational before heading to Atlantic City for the 2011 Ivy League Championships.
Yale
The winter break did not slow down the Bulldogs' hot start to the season, as Yale returned from break to win a dual match versus Longwood and claim the William & Mary Spring Invitational championship. Against Longwood, the freshman duo of Moon and Sun Park finished one-two to lead the Bulldogs to the victory. Then, against 21 other teams at the William & Mary Spring Invitational, the Bulldogs combined to shoot a 30-over par to finish ten strokes ahead of second-place St. John's. Moon captured medalist honors, beating the rest of the field by six strokes. Sophomore Joy Kim's tournament was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the par-3 twelfth hole in the final round of play.
Before the Ivy League Championships, Yale will play in the Georgetown Hoya Invitational on April 4 and 5, as well as the Brown Bear Invitational on April 10 and 11.
