Two Ivy teams -- Penn and Princeton -- have been selected to the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship. Ivy champion Penn received the League's automatic bid and the tournament No. 4 seed, while Princeton received an at-large bid and the No. 8 seed.
The No. 4 Penn women's lacrosse team is slated to play Fairfield on Sunday, May 10. The game will be held at Drexel's Vidas Field and the time is to be determined.
This is the third consecutive NCAA appearance for Penn (13-2), and the first ever bid for the Stags (17-2). Fairfield is running an 11-game winning streak heading into its meeting with the Quakers.
The Stags captured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League regular season title for the second straight season with an undefeated 6-0 mark. Fairfield then knocked off Manhattan and Marist to capture the tournament crown and defeated Sacred Heart 16-10 on Saturday in an NCAA play-in game to earn its berth.
The Princeton women's lacrosse team earned the No. 8 seed in the 2009 NCAA Tournament and will host Georgetown on Sunday, May 10 at Class of 1952 Stadium. Game time is at noon.
This is the 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament bid for the Tigers, who have made the tournament 17 of the last 18 years.
The winner will advance to play the winner of the No. 1 Northwestern/UMass game.
If both schools can navigate the brackets, an all-Ivy semi-final would loom on May 22nd at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md.
