Ivies Well Represented on IWLCA All-Region Teams
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Twenty-one Ivy League women's lacrosse players were named to the 2011 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Region teams. A total of 136 athletes were honored as first or second team selections in the four regions. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on June 11, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
Six of the League's eight teams were represented in either the Northeast Region or Mid-Atlantic Region. In the Northeast, Dartmouth had five selections, including first-team honorees Kat Collins (Sr., Attack), Kristen Giovanniello (Fr., Goalkeeper) and Shannie MacKenzie (Sr., Defense).
Collins and Giovaniello swept the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year honors in 2011, and were also both first team All-Ivy selections. Collins finished the season with 33 goals and 10 assists for 43 points. Giovanniello currently ranks No. 4 in the nation in save percentage (.505) after leading the Division I field in that statistical category for much of the season. She averaged an 8.39 goals against average and 8.62 saves per game during her rookie campaign. MacKenzie was key to the Big Green defense, totalling 28 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers.
Also earning first team honors in the Northeast Region were Harvard's Danielle Tetreault (So., Midfield) and Jennifer VanderMeulen (So., Attack). VanderMeulen a repeat selection to the first team posted a team and league best in goals (48) and goals per game (3.00). The first-team All-Ivy League honoree was first on the team and third in the Ivies in points (53). She scored 100th career goal in regular season finale against Dartmouth. VanderMeulen had three or more goals 12 times and four or more five times. Tetreault earned a spot on the All-Region team for the first time in her career. She was second on the Crimson in goals (36) and points (42). The second-team All-Ivy League recipient led the team in draw controls with 25 and also collected 12 ground balls.
Second team selections in the Northeast Region included Brown's Paris Waterman (Sr., Midfield), Cornell's Kate Ivory (So., Defense) and Jessie Steinberg (Jr., Attack), Dartmouth's Sarah Plumb (Jr., Midfield) and Harvard's Melanie Baskind (Jr., Midfield).
In the Mid-Atlantic Region, Penn and Princeton combined for 10 total selections, including seven first team honorees. The Quakers had a pair of first teamers in Erin Brennan (Jr., Attack) and Giulia Giordano (Sr., Midfield).
Brennan was named a first-team
all-region selection for the second year in a row, the sixth player
in Penn history to be honored at least twice (Christy Bennett
2000-02, Ali DeLuca 2007-10, Rachel
Manson 2007-08, Sarah Waxman 2007-08, Emma
Spiro 2009-10). A first-team All-Ivy selection, Brennan led
the Quakers in goals (34), assists (18) and points (52). Her 34
goals were a career high and Brennan ended her third season ranked
fifth all-time in points by a Penn player with 153.
After earning second-team all-region distinction in 2010, Giordano was a first-team selection this
season. Giordano had 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points this
season, playing the majority of the second half in the midfield
after an ankle injury. The transition to midfield allowed Giordano
to take on opposing teams' attackers, causing a team-high 23
turnovers and picking up 29 ground balls. Giordano, a senior
tri-captain and second-team All-Ivy honoree, graduated with 127
career points, 10th all-time at Penn.
The Ivy League Tournament champion Tigers placed five on the first team including Lindsey deButts (Jr., Defense), Lizzy Drumm (Sr., Midfield), Jaci Gassaway (So., Attack), Cassie Pyle (Jr., Midfield) and Erin Tochihara (Sr., Goalkeeper).
deButts was one of the League-leaders in ground balls, averaing 2.16 per game for a team-high total of 41 on the year. Drumm was the Tigers' offensive leader, netting 45 goals on the season. Her 2.37 per game average ranked No. 6 among all Ivies. Gassaway was also an integral part of the Princeton attack, totalling 32 goals, 13 assists and 45 points on the year. Pyle was the Tigers' leader in assists (19), while also adding 38 goals to rank No. 2 on the squad with 57 points. Tochihara ranked second in the League in saves per game (9.53) and save percentage (.481) and third in goals against average (10.18).
A trio of Quakers earned Mid-Atlantic second team honors -- Emily Leitner (Jr., Gaolkeeper), Lydia Miller (Fr., Defense) and Bridget Waclawik (Sr., Attack).
