Complete 2011 Wrestling All-Ivy release in pdf format
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Cornell Big Red, the nation's No. 1 ranked Division I wrestling team, with nine individuals ranked in their respective division's top 20, dominated the 2011 Ivy League All-Ivy teams, led by Wrestler of the Year Cameron Simaz. The Big Red also had seven first team selections and two second team picks. Penn had seven total wrestlers named to the first and second teams, while also collecting the Rookie of the Year award in the form of Kyle Cowan.
WRESTLER OF THE YEAR
Cameron Simaz, a two-time All-American for
Cornell and currently the No. 1 ranked 197-pound wrestler in the
nation, has unanimously been named the 2011 Ivy League Wrestler of
the Year in a vote by the League’s six head coaches. Simaz, a
junior from Allegan, Mich., keeps the League’s top honor in
house for the third straight year after Mack
Lewnes claimed the award in 2009 and 2010. Lewnes shared
the award with Harvard’s J.P. O’Connor
in 2010.
Simaz, who went 5-0 in Ivy matches this season and is currently
27-1 overall, is also one of nine unanimous first team All-Ivy
selections. No stranger to awards, Simaz was the Ivy League Rookie
of the Year and Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association
(EIWA) Rookie of the Year in 2009, while also earning first team
All-Ivy honors in both 2009 and 2010. He capped his freshman season
with a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships, good for his
first All-American honor. Last year, he was an All-American once
again, placing third at the NCAA Championships. He has continued to
build on that success this season and is a heavy favorite to claim
his first NCAA title.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Kyle Cowan (Tulsa, Okla.) brings the Ivy League
Rookie of the Year honor back to Penn after a nine-year drought,
becoming the first Quaker to earn the award since Mason
Lenhard in 2001. Cowan, a 285-pound wrestler, went 2-1 in
Ivy matches and holds a 16-12 overall record heading into the EIWA
Championships on March 5-6. Cowan went 1-1 against top-20 ranked
opponents in 2011 and earned four victories by fall, the second
most on the Quaker squad.
He has been instrumental in Penn concluding Ivy action with a 4-1
record, the one team loss coming at the hands of top-ranked
Cornell. The Quakers finished the regular season with a 10-5 dual
meet record.
FIRST TEAM ALL-IVY
Nine of the 10 first team All-Ivy selections were unanimous picks
by the League’s head coaches, including Mike
Grey (133, Rockaway, N.J.), Kyle Dake
(149, Ithaca, N.Y.), Justin Kerber (165,
Emmetsburg, Iowa), Mack Lewnes (174, Annapolis,
Md.), Steve Bosak (184, State College, Pa.) and
Simaz (197) from Ivy League champion Cornell. Penn’s
Zack Kemmerer (141, East Greenville, Pa.),
Harvard’s Walter Peppelman (157, Harrisburg,
Pa.) and Columbia’s Kevin Lester (285 Nampa,
Idaho) were also unanimous first team selections while
Cornell’s Frank Perrelli (125, Hackettstown,
N.J.) rounded out the 10-man first team.
The Big Red’s dominance of the first team All-Ivy is no
surprise as the squad went a perfect 5-0 in League duals for its
ninth straight title. Cornell, ranked No. 1 in the nation for the
majority of the season, finished the regular season with a 13-1
overall dual record.
At 125 pounds, Perrelli went 4-1 in Ivy action and 27-11 overall.
The senior, who competed as a back-up to four-time All-American
Troy Nickerson for the last three seasons, is currently ranked No.
12 in the nation.
Ranked No. 6 in the nation at 133-pounds, Grey went a perfect 5-0
in Ivy duals and holds an 8-0 overall record. The Ivy League Rookie
of the Year in 2008, he is now a four-time unanimous first team
selection.
Kemmerer earns his first career first team All-Ivy selection after
collecting second team honors in 2010. He went a perfect 4-0 in Ivy
duals while also collecting a 31-5 overall dual record this season.
Ranked No. 12 nationally, he went 2-3 against top 20 opponents and
ranks third on the Quaker squad with five wins by major
decision.
Dake earns his second straight unanimous first team selection at
149 pounds. The sophomore was undefeated in Ivy duals at 5-0 and
has lost just once all season, compiling a 24-1 overall record to
go along with a No. 2 national ranking. The Ivy League Rookie of
the Year in 2010, Dake capped one of the most impressive freshman
season’s in Cornell history with a 24-match win streak and
the NCAA title at 141-pounds.
At 157 pounds, Peppelman went 5-0 in Ivy action while also posting
a 24-4 overall record. Currently ranked No. 6 in the nation, the
sophomore led the Crimson in both wins by fall (3) and technical
fall (4).
At 165 pounds, Kerber earns his third unanimous first team
selection, having previously made the cut in 2008 at 197 pounds and
2010 at 165 pounds. In 2009, he was a second team selection while
competing at 184 pounds. This season Kerber went 3-0 in Ivy duals
and 28-2 overall. An NCAA qualifier the past two seasons, he is
currently ranked No. 5 nationally and will be seeking All-American
status this year.
The Ivy League Wrestler of the Year in 2009 and Co-Wrestler in
2010, Lewnes earns his third consecutive unanimous first team
selection and second straight at 174 pounds. He completed Ivy
action with a 5-0 record, while also going 32-2 overall, and is
tied for the Big Red lead with 13 wins by fall. A fourth-place
finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships granted the then freshman
All-American status and he seeks to end his collegiate career the
way it started as he enters the postseason ranked No. 3 in the
nation.
A second team selection and NCAA qualifier in 2010, Bosak went 2-0
at 184 pounds in Ivy duals on his way to unanimous first team
honors. He carries an overall record of 27-2, including six wins by
fall and seven by major decision. Ranked No. 6 nationally, the
junior will be seeking his first All-American finish at the 2011
NCAA Championships.
At 197 pounds, Simaz adds a third consecutive unanimous first team
selection to his list of accolades. With just one loss on the
season, a one-point decision to No. 4 ranked Dustin Kilgore from
Kent State, Simaz holds a career record of 104-20. This season he
is tied for the Cornell lead with 13 wins by fall, including two in
under one minute.
Rounding out the 2011 first team is Lester at 285 pounds. The
Columbia junior went 5-0 in Ivy duals and 23-6 overall. As a
freshman in 2007, he was an honorable mention selection, then
earned second team honors in 2010.
SECOND TEAM ALL-IVY
Six Quakers headline the 11-member second team including
Mark Rappo (125, Holland, Pa.), Rollie
Peterkin (133, Wellesley, Mass.), Andrew
Lenzi (149, Buchanan, N.Y.), Scott Giffin
(174, Berlin, N.J.), Micah Burak (197, Colorado
Springs, Colo.) and Cowan (285).
The remaining second team picks include Cornell’s
Corey Manson (141, Lookout Mountain, Tenn.) and
DJ Meagher (157, Bow, N.H.), Columbia’s
Eren Civan (165, Bethesda, Md.) and Nick
Mills (184, South Euclid, Ohio) and Harvard’s
Cameron Croy (184, Brentwood, Tenn.).
Showing the depth of competition in the Ivy League, four second
team members are currently ranked in the top 20 — Rappo is
No. 18 at 125, Peterkin is No. 10 at 133, Meagher is No. 14 at `157
and Burak is No. 9 at 197.
