ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell freshman 184-pounder Gabe Dean has been named the EIWA Wrestler of the Week and the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week after winning the Southern Scuffle title with a pair of wins over top-ranked opponents, including knocking off two-time defending national champion Ed Ruth of Penn State in the final.

Dean's 7-4 victory over Ruth ended the Penn State star's 84-match win streak and handed him his first defeat since 2011. The freshman avenged one of his two losses on the year after he was pinned 1:24 into the final of the season-opening Binghamton Open.

At 21-2, Dean has already knocked off some of the nation's top wrestlers, including No. 1 Ruth, No. 4 Kevin Steinhaus (Minnesota) and No. 5 Jake Swartz (Boise State), while his only two losses have come against Ruth and No. 2 Jimmy Sheptuck (Maryland), a 5-3 decision at the Grapple at the Garden. He is now on a 12-match win streak of his own and has won tournament titles at the New York State Intercollegiate, the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Southern Scuffle.
