PRINCETON, N.J. -- In a virtual Ivy League championship Saturday, Penn (9-6-2, 4-1-2) and Princeton (9-6-1, 4-2-1) battled for 110 minutes, but neither team would concede a goal as the Quakers earned the 2010 Ivy title. Penn finished with 14 points to Princeton's 13. Dartmouth (7-7-2, 4-2-1) closed out its season with a 1-0 win over Cornell (6-8-1, 1-5-1) to match the Tigers' 13 points and finish in a tie for second.
Penn's title is the third in program history, their last coming
in 2007. The Quakers' first League championship was a three-way tie
along with Dartmouth and Princeton in 2001. The Ivy title also
secured the League's automatic bid into the 64-team NCAA
Championship field and will face Big Ten champ Penn State in the
first round. The Quakers and Nittany Lions meet Friday at 3:30 p.m.
at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.
West Virginia and Morehead State will kick off Friday at 6 p.m.
Friday’s winners advance to the second round for a 1 p.m.
contest on Sunday, Nov. 14.
In other Ivy action last week, Harvard (8-7-1, 4-3-0) clinched fourth place with a 2-0 win over Columbia (9-5-2, 3-3-1) and Yale (8-8-1, 3-4-0) topped Brown (7-6-4, 1-4-1). The Crimson officially closes out its season Thursday at Fairfield.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Caroline Williams (Ambler, Pa.) secured the Ivy
League championship for her Penn Quakers by recording a season-high
eight saves to preserve a scoreless tie against Princeton Saturday.
For her efforts, Williams earned the final 2010 Player of the Week
honor.
Williams had four saves each in the first and second halves, and got some help from defender Colleen Barry in the second overtime, as Berry blocked a potential game-winner off the line in the final second of play. The shutout was the seventh of the season for Williams, which ties for the Ivy League high. It was also the fifth shutout in the past six games for the Quaker team, who finished the regular-season on a six-game unbeaten streak.
Williams allowed just 15 goals on the season for a 0.87 GAA. She also collected 67 saves for 3.94 per game and a .817 save percentage.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth freshman Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield,
Conn.) earned her second Rookie of the Week award in the last three
weeks after helping the Big Green to a season-ending 1-0 win over
Cornell.
Lozier recorded a point in her third consecutive game Saturday, assisting Aly O’Dea’s game-winner in the 67th minute. The rookie midfielder also had three shots in the game as Dartmouth earned a 15-9 shot advantage over the Big Red.
Lozier concluded her rookie season with three goals, including one game-winner, and three assists. Her efforts helped the Big Green to a 7-72 overall record and 4-2-1 mark in the Ivy League, good for a tie of second place and the best finish since 2006.
