Complete Women's Soccer Weekly Release in pdf format
PRINCETON, N.J. -- With just two rounds of play remaining, the Ivy League title remains a wide open race, particularly after a pair of big wins by Dartmouth (5-7-2, 2-2-1) and Harvard (6-6-1, 3-2-0) last week. The Big Green took down previously unbeaten (in Ivy play) Columbia (9-3-3, 3-1-1), 2-1, and the Crimson rolled past Princeton (8-6-0, 3-2-0), 4-0.
Columbia and Penn (7-6-1, 3-1-1) now enter this week with 10 points each, followed closely by Princeton and Harvard with nine points. Dartmouth is not far behind with seven points and, mathematically, Brown (7-4-4, 1-2-2) and Cornell (6-6-1, 1-3-1) are still in the mix.
This week’s Ivy match-ups feature Harvard at Dartmouth, Princeton at Cornell, Brown at Penn and Columbia at Yale and wins are crucial for all squads.
Earlier in the week, Harvard host Quinnipiac (Monday, Oct. 25) and Penn hosts Lehigh (Wednesday, Oct. 27) in their final non-conference games of the season.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
In a critical 4-0 victory at Princeton Saturday, Harvard’s
Melanie Baskind (Framingham, Mass.) contributed to
all four of Harvard’s goals, establishing a new career-high
with six points in the process and earning her second Player of the
Week honors of 2010.
Baskind netted two goals and assisted on two other tallies, while firing six shots, all of which were on target. The junior midfielder gave the Crimson a 1-0 lead at 18:29, beating Princeton goalkeeper Kristin Watson in a one-on-one opportunity. In the second half, Baskind assisted on Katherine Sheeleigh’s goal at 60:59, and then scored her second tally less than four minutes later at 64:18. On her second goal, Baskind fired a hard shot from 18 yards out that sailed over the goalkeeper’s head, making it 3-0 Harvard. Only two minutes later, Baskind picked up her second assist of the game on a score by Alexandra Conigliaro at 66:21. The victory helped keep Harvard alive in the Ivy League title race, pushing the Crimson’s conference mark to 3-2 with two games remaining.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth freshman Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield,
Conn.) played a huge role in knocking off first-place Columbia,
2-1, earning her first Rookie of the Week honors.
The rookie midfielder assisted the Big Green’s first goal and scored the second as Dartmouth halted Columbia’s eight-game unbeaten streak, and kept the Lions from pulling away in the Ivy standings.
Lozier first helped put her team up 1-0 before halftime with an assist on Peyton Tata’s goal in the 38th minute. Later, in the 75th minute, Lozier scored a critical insurance goal off a corner kick that would eventually be the game-winner. Columbia got on the board just over a minute later making Lozier’s goal the winner in the 2-1 victory. After playing a role in both goals against Columbia, Lozier ranks third on the team in scoring with two goals and two assists.
