NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale women's soccer coach Rudy Meredith's stint with the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team was a success. Meredith, serving as an assistant coach, helped the United States capture a Three Nations Tournament in Stjordalen, Norway.
Team USA rolled to a 4-1 win over Norway on Sunday after opening play with a 1-1 tie with Sweden. The U.S. finished 1-0-1, while Norway was 1-1-0 and Sweden was 0-1-1.
Yale defender Meredith Speck, who was named to the team earlier this month, suffered an injury in practice in the days leading up to the tournament and was unable to play. Nevertheless, Speck impressed U.S. head coach Randy Waldrum, who also is the head coach at Notre Dame, in her limited time with the team.
"She's shown well in training, and she is young so I'll certainly have her back in future camps," Waldrum wrote on Irish UNDerground, the official blog of Notre Dame Athletics.
The USA roster was made up of top college players and recent graduates who are playing in the U.S. amateur leagues and semi-professional leagues around the world.
