PRINCETON, N.J. -- With three Ivy games
remaining, there are five women’s soccer teams still within
grasp of the League title and the automatic bid to the NCAA
Championship.
Princeton (9-3-1, 4-0-0 Ivy) took over sole possession of
first-place in the standings and is 4-0 in the League for the first
time since 2004 after a 2-1 win over Columbia (6-7-0, 2-2-0 Ivy),
the second Ivy loss for the Lions. Sophomore Lauren
Lazo’s goal in the 28th minute gave the Tigers a 2-0
lead and proved to be the gamewinner, as Columbia got on the board
in the 81st minute on junior Coleen Rizzo’s
score. The Lions were unable to capitalize on a pair of corner
kicks in the 88th minute and Princeton held on for the victory.
Penn (7-5-1, 3-1-0 Ivy) suffered its first Ivy loss of the season,
falling to Dartmouth (9-4-0, 3-1-0 Ivy), 2-1. The Quakers and the
Big Green are tied in second-place with nine points apiece, just
ahead of last year’s League champion, Harvard (6-3-3, 2-1-1
Ivy). The Crimson is now in fourth-place in the standings with
seven points thanks to a 4-1 win over Brown (6-6-0, 0-4-0 Ivy). All
five goals were scored in the second half as Harvard recorded its
highest offensive output since netting four goals against New
Hampshire on Sept. 25, 2011. Sophomore Meg
Casscells-Hamby factored into all of her team’s
goals with a career-high six points on two goals and two
assists.
Yale (6-6-0, 1-3-0 Ivy) picked up its first Ivy win of the season
with a 1-0 win over Cornell (1-11-1, 0-3-1 Ivy). The Big Red lost
in heartbreaking fashion, giving up an own goal with 5:58 left in
regulation. It was Yale's first shutout in Ithaca since a 2-0 win
in 2004.
Dartmouth and Princeton each went 2-0 on the week, as both teams
won their non-conference matchups. The Big Green defeated Brown in
a non-conference game, 1-0, while the Tigers defeated Lehigh,
6-1.
This coming week should provide some clarity in the race for the
conference title, as Princeton will host Harvard on Oct. 20. That
same day, Columbia faces Dartmouth in New York and Penn travels to
Yale. On Sunday, Brown will host Cornell. The League’s
non-conference contests include Harvard hosting Holy Cross on
Tuesday and Dartmouth facing Boston U. on Wednesday.
CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Princeton senior Jen Hoy (Sellersville, Pa.) and
Dartmouth senior Aurelia Solomon (Washington) were
instrumental in their teams’ 2-0 weeks.
Hoy scored four goals in the two games, including three in a 6-1
win over Lehigh for her third hat trick of the season. Her fourth
goal of the week gave Princeton a 1-0 lead in its eventual 2-1 win
over Columbia that kept the Tigers undefeated in League play. Hoy
has 15 goals on the season, the second-best single-season mark in
program history. She is ahead of the pace set by Princeton's
single-season record holder, Esmeralda Negron, who
had 10 goals through 13 games in 2004. Negron finished with 20
scores that season.
Hoy takes home her third Player of the Week award this season
(Sept. 3, Sept. 24) to become the second Tiger to accomplish that
feat and the first since Negron earned the award three times in
2004. Hoy has now received the accolade four times overall.

Solomon tallied three points on a goal and an assist last week,
but she made each point count. She assisted the gamewinner in
Dartmouth’s 1-0 non-conference win over Brown and then scored
the gamewinner in a 2-1 victory over Penn, which was the
Quakers’ first Ivy loss of the season. Dartmouth has won
three in a row and Solomon has recorded at least a point in each
victory.
Solomon becomes the second Big Green to earn Player of the Week
honors this season, joining teammate Emma Brush
(Sept. 10). It marks the first time that Dartmouth received two
Player of the Week honors in the same season since 2006, when
Amanda Webb (10/10) and Nicole
Cameli (Oct. 31) were the recipients.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Yale freshman goalkeeper Rachel Ames (Huntsville,
Ala.) led Yale to its first Ivy League victory, posting four saves
in a 1-0 win over Cornell. It marked Ames’ first career
shutout and the Bulldogs’ third cleansheet of the season. The
win ended a three-game losing streak for Yale. Ames improved to 3-4
on the year with the victory.
Ames earns her first career Ivy League weekly award and joins
Paula Hagopian, who was named Rookie of the Week
on Sept. 3.
