PRINCETON, N.J. -- With two more weeks
remaining in the women’s soccer regular season, and two more
Ivy games remaining for each of Ancient Eight, the race for the
League title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is coming
down to the wire.
Princeton (10-3-1, 5-0-0 Ivy) is still in first-place after a 3-1
win over last year’s champion, Harvard (7-4-3, 2-2-1 Ivy).
All four goals were scored in the second half. The loss ended the
Crimson's six-game winning streak, as well as Harvard's two-game
winning streak against Princeton. The Tigers have won eight in a
row, the program's longest streak since 2004, which is also the
last time the team started 5-0 in Ivy play. That 2004 team went
undefeated in conference action.
The Crimson’s loss means the title race comes down to three
teams: Princeton, Dartmouth and Penn. The Big Green (11-4-0, 4-1-0
Ivy) used a goal from sophomore Tasha Wilkins in
the 66th minute to upend Columbia (6-8-0, 2-3-0 Ivy), 1-0, while
Penn (8-5-1, 4-1-0 Ivy) kept pace with Dartmouth by defeating Yale,
2-0. After a Yale own goal gave the Quakers the early lead, junior
Kathryn Barth put the game out of reach with a
score in the 80th minute off an assist from sophomore Clara
Midgley.
Princeton defeated Dartmouth, 2-1 on Sept. 29, and the Big Green
held off Penn by that same score on Oct. 13. The Tigers and Quakers
will square off in the final game of the season on Nov. 3.
In the other League contest last week, Brown ended a five-game
losing streak with a 1-0 win over Cornell. Junior Louisa
Pitney netted the gamewinner off assists from Mika
Siegelman and Eliza Marshall in the 10th
minute, and junior goalkeeper Amber Bledsoe
preserved her first career shutout with three saves.
In non-conference action, Mai Le posted a goal
and an assist to lead Harvard to a 4-0 win over Holy Cross, and
Dartmouth posted a 2-1 win over Boston University thanks to a
gamewinning score from sophomore Kendall
Kraus.
This week’s non-conference action features a battle of
winning streaks, as Princeton (eight-straight wins) will take on La
Salle (10-straight wins) on Monday. That same day, Yale will host
Fairfield, and on Wednesday Harvard will host Brown for a
non-conference game. In Ivy play, Yale will play Columbia, Penn
will take on Penn, Cornell will host Princeton and Dartmouth will
face Harvard.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Princeton kept itself at the lead of the pack with a 3-1 win over
Harvard, eliminating the Crimson from Ivy championship
consideration in the process. Tigers senior midfielder
Rachel Sheehy (Exton, Pa.) was a key factor in her
team’s performance, assisting Princeton’s first two
goals, including the eventual gamewinner. Sheehy took a corner kick
in the 61st minute that was headed in by senior Caitlin
Blosser for a 1-0 Tigers lead. After Harvard tied the game
in the 70th minute, Sheehy’s free kick in the 80th minute
found junior Gabriella Guzman, who sent it to the
back of the net for the 2-1 lead.
Sheehy posted her first career multi-assist game, and now has a
career-best five assists on the year. Sheehy takes home her first
career Ivy League weekly award and the fourth for Princeton this
season, joining senior Jen Hoy, who has earned the
honor three times (Sept. 3, Sept. 24, Oct. 15). Sheehy is the first
Princeton player not named Hoy to receive Player of the Week
accolades since Blosser on Oct. 4, 2010.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Needing a win to remain in the race for the Ivy League
championship, Dartmouth was locked in a scoreless draw with
Columbia through almost 66 minutes of action. Then, in the 66th
minute, Big Green freshman Corey Delaney (Chatham,
N.J.) took a shot that rebounded to sophomore Tasha
Wilkins, who hammered sent the ball to the back of the net
for the eventual gamewinner in a 1-0 Dartmouth victory. Delaney got
credit for the assist, her team-leading fifth of the season.
Delaney becomes Dartmouth’s first-ever three-time Ivy League
Rookie of the Week (Sept. 17, Sept. 24). She is the first
three-time recipient of the accolade since Penn’s
Kerry Scalora in 2010, and her award marks the
first time Dartmouth received three Rookie of the Week honors in a
single season since 1998, when Jamie Lang (Sept.
21, Nov. 2) and Lindsey Bergren (Sept. 28) were
the honorees.
