PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Harvard women’s
soccer team is heading back to the NCAA Tournament. The Crimson
clinched its second Ivy title in three years with a 2-1 win over
Dartmouth, marking its 11th overall League championship.
In the 36th minute against the Big Green (7-6-3, 3-3-0 Ivy) on Saturday, Harvard freshman Midge Purce found senior Peyton Johnson, who in turn found the back of the net to give the Crimson a 2-0 lead, and it would go on to win, 2-1 to clinch the Ivy League title.
The Crimson (11-3-2, 6-0-0 Ivy) returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. It has a chance to clinch its second unbeaten Ivy season in three years, as it finished 6-0-1 in 2011, and its first 7-0-0 campaign since 1999 when it faces Columbia (8-5-3, 1-3-2 Ivy) in New York on Nov. 9.
Penn (11-1-4, 4-1-1 Ivy) saw its chances at overtaking Harvard for the League title come to an end despite a 1-0 win at Brown (8-6-1, 3-2-1 Ivy), which had come into the game tied for second-place with the Quakers. Junior Haley Cooper netted the gamewinner for Penn in the second minute and then the defense did the rest, limiting the Bears to just three shots on goal, all of which were turned aside by sophomore goalkeeper Kalijah Terilli.
Columbia and Princeton each picked up their first Ivy victories of the season, as the Lions (8-5-3, 1-3-2 Ivy) defeated Yale (7-6-1, 2-3-1 Ivy), 3-1, and the Tigers (7-5-4, 1-4-1 Ivy) shut out Cornell (7-7-1, 1-5-0 Ivy), 4-0.
The upcoming weekend features the final regular season games of the 2013 Ivy League women’s soccer season. On Friday, Princeton travels to Penn for a 6:00 p.m. start, followed by Brown at Yale at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, Cornell takes on Dartmouth at noon and Harvard faces Columbia at 4:00 p.m. Sunday features the last game of the regular season, as Yale will play Brown in non-conference action.
The Ivy League® Digital Network will stream four of the five games this week, including Princeton at Penn and Brown at Yale on Friday, Cornell at Dartmouth on Saturday and Yale at Brown on Sunday.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Princeton junior Lauren Lazo (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led her team to a 2-0 week with a goal and three assists, including a score and two assists in a 4-0 win over Cornell. She also tallied an assist in the Tigers’ 3-1 victory over Colgate.
Princeton’s game against Colgate marked a battle between 2012 NCAA Tournament teams. After a scoreless first half, the Tigers got on the board first when Lazo took a shot in the 50th minute that was saved off the post and came to junior Melissa Downey, who sent it to the back of the net. Lazo then posted a season-high four points in the win over the Big Red. She factored into Princeton’s first three goals, assisting the first two and scoring the third.
Lazo earns her first Ivy League weekly award of the season, her third career Player of the Week honor and the fifth weekly award of her career, as she was named Rookie of the Week twice in 2011.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
With her team needing a win over Dartmouth to clinch the Ivy League title, Harvard freshman Midge Purce (Olney, Md.) rose to the occasion, tallying a goal and an assist as the Crimson held off the Big Green, 2-1.
Purce scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute. She then assisted the eventual gamewinner, collaborating with senior Peyton Johnson in the 36th minute. Purce leads the League in both goals (11) and points (26) and takes home her third Ivy League weekly award of the year, as she was named Player and Rookie of the Week on Oct. 14.
