PRINCETON, N.J. -- Almost halfway through the
Ivy League women’s soccer season and four teams have
separated from the pack, including two that remain undefeated.
Harvard (7-3-2, 3-0-0 Ivy) continued its run through the League with a win over Cornell (7-4-1, 1-2-0), 7-2. It marked the most goals in a single game for the Crimson since Oct. 8, 2000, when it tallied seven against Davidson, and the most goals in an Ivy contest since Oct. 22, 1995, when it finished with seven against Princeton. Ten players tallied at least a point for the Harvard, including a goal and an assist apiece for freshmen Karly Zlatic and Margaret Purce and two goals by senior Elizabeth Weisman.
Harvard also battled Boston University to a 1-1 tie and is now on a nine-game unbeaten streak, its longest since it went on a 10-game undefeated streak in 2011.
Brown (7-2-1, 2-0-1 Ivy) extended its own unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-0 win over last year’s League champion Princeton (4-4-3, 0-3-0). The Bears have not conceded a goal in their past five contests and are on their longest unbeaten streak since 2007 (seven games). Brown's seven victories matches its total from all of last year with seven games to go. Junior Chloe Cross and senior Mika Siegelman found the back of the net for Brown in the win over the Tigers, who have been held scoreless for three straight games for the first time since 2007.
Penn (7-1-3) and Dartmouth (5-4-2) each won last week to improve to 2-1-0 in Ivy play. Both squads recorded scores of 1-0 as the Quakers upended Columbia (6-4-2, 0-2-1 Ivy) and the Big Green held off Yale (5-5-0, 1-2-0 Ivy).
This week's non-conference slate includes three games against Patriot League foes. On Monday at 3:00 p.m., Penn will face Navy, which is currently undefeated and in first-place in the Patriot League. Columbia will take on Lafayette on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., while Dartmouth will host Boston U. and Princeton will face Lehigh on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
In League play, the two undefeated Ivy teams will face off on Saturday when Harvard hosts Brown at 4:00 p.m. Penn and Dartmouth will square off in Philadelphia at 5:00 p.m., while Princeton will host Columbia at 1:30 p.m. and Yale will play Cornell at 6:30 p.m.
The Ivy League® Digital Network features six games this week, including all four Ivy contests, as well as Boston U. at Dartmouth and Lehigh at Princeton on Wednesday.
PLAYER/ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Harvard freshman Margaret Purce (Olney, Md.) came into the week having scored a goal in back-to-back games, and when the week ended the streak had been improved to back-to-back-to-back-to-back contests. Purce tallied two goals and an assist in two games for the Crimson, which went 1-0-1. Against Boston University, Purce netted the equalizer in the 28th minute, the first goal that BU has allowed at home since Sept. 23, 2012. She followed that with a one-goal, one-assist performance in her team’s 7-2 win over Cornell.
Purce is the first Crimson to earn Player of the Week as a freshman since Jenn Minkus on Oct. 30, 1991. She is also the third freshman to earn Player and Rookie of the Week this season, joining Princeton’s Tyler Lussi (Sept. 9) and Cornell’s Elizabeth Crowell (Sept. 16). Purce becomes the first Harvard player to be named Player of the Week since Lindsey Kowal on Oct. 10, 2011.
