Schoonmaker in as Interim Cornell Women's Tennis Coach

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Barry Schoonmaker, who served as the men's tennis coach at Cornell since 1995, has been named the interim Carl Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis this coming season it was announced today by the Meakem*Smith Director of Athletics Andy Noel. Schoonmaker will relinquish his duties as head men's tennis coach.

As head coach of the men's tennis program, Schoonmaker guided the Big Red to an overall record of 158-133. The team posted 11 consecutive years with a .500 mark or better , the longest string Cornell has ever compiled. The 2001-02 season's 17-6 record (4-3 Ivy) marked the most overall wins for the squad since 1953 and the first winning season in the Ivy League in 35 years. In his 14 seasons, Schoonmaker coached three first-team All-Ivy League singles players and two first-team All-Ivy doubles teams, as well as 2000 Ivy League Player of the Year Mike Halperin. The Big Red was ranked nationally in five of those seasons, with a high national ranking of No. 63 during the 2004 campaign.

Prior to taking over as the Richard Savitt & Stephen Weiss Head Coach of Men's Tennis during the spring of 1995, Schoonmaker served as an assistant coach and associate head coach for a total of six years.

Prior to coming to Cornell, Schoonmaker was head tennis coach at Siena College from 1987-89 and assistant manager and assistant tennis pro at the Southwood Tennis Club in Albany, from 1986-89. He also served as the head tennis pro at the Colonie Country Club in Voorheesville, N.Y., from 1987-93.

A 1986 graduate of Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., Schoonmaker earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He is a USPTR certified pro and a USRSA certified racquet stringer.

A member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's operating committee, Schoonmaker served as the chair of the Region I ranking and awards committee from 1998-2000. From 2000-02, he was also chair of the National Collegiate Indoor Tennis Championships in Dallas, Texas. In 1991 and 1992, Schoonmaker was the Eastern Tennis Association (ETA) traveling coach to the National Junior championships at Kalamazoo, Mich. The 1994 ETA Coach of the Year, he was also the ETA traveling coach for the 16-and-under Clay Court Nationals at Nashville, Tenn., in 1993 and 1994, and for the 18-and-under Clay Court Nationals in Louisville, Ky., in 1995 and 1996. Schoonmaker was the tournament director for the 2003 Region I championships held at Cornell and he is currently working with the ETA 16-and-under and 18-and-under boys at the national championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Schoonmaker and his wife, Paula, have a daughter, Lydia, and a son, Derek.
