Six Women's Tennis Teams Take To The Courts This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Six Ivy women's tennis teams take to the courts this weekend, five of which are headed west for the first national singles and doubles titles of the 2010-11 collegiate tennis season.

Penn will be at the Saint Joseph's Invitational while Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton and Yale will be competing at the ITA/Riveria Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Hosted by the Riveria Tennis Club for the 26th straight year, the tournament includes six rounds of prequalifying and qualifying matches beginning Saturday, Oct. 2.

Columbia and Cornell are off this weekend and will back in action Oct. 9-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women's College Invitational in Flushing, N.Y., with Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn and Yale.

A LOOK BACK
Brown hosted Auburn, Boston College, Boston University and Rutgers its three-day Brown Invitational. Bears senior Bianca Aboubakare was defeated in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the Brown Flight singles final to Auburn's Caroline Thornton, while freshmen Jessica Harrow defeated Boston College's Veronica Corning 7-5, 6-4 in the Scarlet Knights Flight singles final and Ariel Caldwell defeated Auburn's Plamena Kurteva 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in the Terriers Flight singles final.

At the 14th Annual Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational hosted by Penn, the Quakers' Connie Hsu captured both the singles and doubles championships, teaming up with senior Alexa Ely. Hsu and Ely topped Binghamton's Jillian Santos and Yulia Smilnova, 8-6, in the title match. The pair worked their way through the brackets, overcoming four competitive teams along the way. With just a short rest, Hsu hit the court again, facing Maryland's Ana Belzunce in the singles championship. Winning the first set, 6-3, the No. 4 freshman in the country blazed her serve past Belzunce on match point again to win 6-2, and sweep the titles on straight sets.
