PRINCETON, N.J. -- The weather outside may be winter right now but it's spring in the world of Ivy League women's tennis as the spring dual match portion of the 2010-11 schedule kicks into high gear this weekend with five Ivy teams on the courts Jan. 22-23.
Actually Penn opened the League's spring slate earlier this week on Jan. 19 with a 7-0 win over Drexel. This weekend, Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn and Yale are all in action playing a combined total of seven matches.
Next weekend, five Ivy teams -- Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton and Yale -- will be participating in the ITA Division I Kickoff Weekend Jan. 28-31, which will take place at 15 sites across the country. All five teams will be facing the host school in their opening matches (Brown at Duke, Dartmouth at Clemson, Harvard at Northwestern, Princeton at Florida State and Yale at Notre Dame). The losers of the opening matches will play a consolation match while the winners will play a championship match the next day. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the Feb. 18-21 ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Boar's Head Sports Club hosted by the University of Virginia.
Also in action next weekend is Cornell, hosting its winter invitational, Columbia welcoming Fairleigh Dickinson on Jan. 29 and Penn hosting George Washington on Jan. 30.
Entering the spring schedule, Penn freshman Connie Hsu is the top-ranked Ivy League player in the latest ITA rankings at. No. 14 in the Jan. 4 rankings. She is followed by three fellow Ivies -- Harvard's Holly Cao ranked 45th, Yale's Elizabeth Epstein ranked 65th, and Dartmouth's Molly Scott ranked 94th. Hsu has already earned convincing victories over Cao and Scott during the fall. She defeated Cao (6-3, 6-2) to win Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational and did not allow a game to Scott (6-0, 6-0) in their ITA Regional semifinal match.
