Women's Tennis Teams Close Out Play in Fall Tournaments

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League women's tennis teams closed out play in fall tournaments with all eight teams in action over the final weekend.

Columbia, Penn and Yale represented the Ivy League at the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., with wins in both the singles and double main draws.

Penn freshman Connie Hsu needed just two sets, 6-3, 6-3, to take care of Florida's Olivia Janowicz in her opening match. Hsu advanced to the round of 16 to face Michigan's Denise Mauresan, ranked 12th in the nation. She won the first set convincingly, but Muresan came back to win the next two for the 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

Yale junior Vicky Brook and senior Lindsay Clark defeated Barbora Krtickova and Alida Muller-Wehlau of Armstrong Atlantic State 8-4 in their opening match in the doubles bracket, but then fell to Alabama's Alexa Guarachi and Courtney McLane 8-4 in the quarterfinals.

Columbia sophomore Nicole Bartnik competed the singles main draw as a wild card and lost in her two matches --- 6-2, 6-2 to Florida's Alex Cercone in the first round and 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to fourth-seeded Biana Eichkorn of Miami (Fla.) in the consolation round. Bartnik also had a shot in the doubles main draw with first-year Biana Sanon. The Lions' duo were unsuccessful in their two matches, losing 8-4 to Tennessee's Brynn Boren and Maria Sorbello 8-4 in the main draw match and 9-7 in a hard-fought match to Virginia's Maria Fuccillo and Rashmi Teltumbde in the consolation bracket.

At the Big Green Invitational, Dartmouth totaled 11 singles and six doubles wins over the three-day tournament in which the Big Green faced Massachusetts on day one, Boston College and Ohio State on day two and Boston University on day three. Sophomores Christina Danosi and Jeri Reichel led Dartmouth with two wins as a doubles team, as did the duo of senior Molly Scott and freshman Melissa Matsuoka, while Danosi earned three singles victories and Reichel earned two win as did freshman Sabrina Stewart.

At the Harvard Invitational, the Crimson hosted Air Force, Brown, Cornell and Syracuse in an individual round-robin format. Brown sophomore Misia Krasowski led the Bears, winning all three of her singles matches, and combining with senior Bianca Aboubakare to win all three of her doubles matches. Aboubakare finished 5-1 overall, while junior Julie Flanzer was 4-1. Harvard won a total of 15 matches during the round robin tournament. Sophomore Hideko Tachibana earned a victory in singles play each day of competition. Sophomore Alexandra Lehman won three doubles matches on the weekend, one with Tachibana and two with freshman Amanda Black. Fellow rookie Hannah Morrill notched three wins for the Crimson, two singles and one doubles win with teammate senior Samantha Rosekrans. For Cornell, freshman Ryann Young and sophomore Christine Ordway teamed up for two doubles victories. Freshman Kelly Comolli won a pair of singles matches, while Young and Ordway also picked up a singles win each. 

At the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., Princeton competed in singles and doubles matches each day against players from various schools. Tiger players faced players from Texas A&M in doubles and Virginia and UNC Greensboro in singles on day one, Maryland and Duke in doubles and William & Mary in singles on day two and UNC Greensboro in doubles and Minnesota in singles on day three. Freshman Katherine Flanigan picked up three singles and two doubles wins, one with senior Blakely Ashley and one with sophomore Monica Chow. Ashley and Chow also earned three singles victories each, while junior Hilary Bartlett and senior Taylor Marable combined for two doubles wins.

In a late addition to the fall schedule, Yale wrapped up the fall 2010 season with a 7-0 home victory over Buffalo on Nov. 7.

Ivy League women's tennis teams are back on the courts in late January with spring tournament play before entering the dual match season.
