Indoor Track & Field Update 5

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Personal records, school records, ECAC and IC4A qualifying marks and national top 20 marks were abound across the Ivy League in last weekend's indoor track & field action.

Those performances were indicative in the season's second USTFCCA NCAA Division I Regional rankings, released Tuesday. In the women's Mid-Atlantic Region, Princeton held steady at No. 2, trailing Penn State, while Penn moved up one spot to No. 9. In the Northeast Region, Columbia (No. 2) and Cornell (No. 3) flip-flopped positions from a week ago while Brown (No. 9) and Dartmouth (No. 10) each moved up multiple positions. Harvard rounded things out with a No. 11 rank in the Northeast Region.

In the men's Mid-Atlantic Region, Princeton climbed from No. 3 to No. 2 and Penn moved from No. 13 to No. 11. In the Northeast Region, Cornell held at No. 2 and Dartmouth climbed to No. 3 (from No. 6).

At the Penn State National Invitational, Columbia's Sharay Hale, last year's Ivy League Heptagonal indoor champ in the 200m and 400m, broke her own record of 24.20 in the 200m, lowering the standard to 24.15. She also ran a 53.77 in the 400m, currently the ninth fastest time in the nation. Teammate QueenDenise Okeke placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 40-9.5 (12.43m), shattering the Lions' school record of 12.16m, and rookie Tara Richmond won the high jump with a League-best jump of 5-10.5, the fifteenth best mark in the nation.

In women's distance events, Princeton's Ashley Higginson placed second in the 3,000m run at the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory II, finishing in 9:14.47, which is currently No. 6 in the nation. Meanwhile, at the Boston University Terrier Classic, a quartet of Ivy harriers recorded national top 20 times in the 5,000m run. Cornell's Kelsey Karys raced to a current 2011 Ivy-best 16:45.44 (No. 11 in the nation) while teammate Katie Kellner holds the nation's No. 15 time of 16:50.92. The Dartmouth duo of Amy Schuman and Caitie Meyer are ranked No. 16 and 16, respectively, with times of 16:52.49 and 16:59.99. Penn's Leslie Kovach rounded out the group by finishing in 16:55.94, giving her the No. 20 fastest time in the nation.

In men's action, Princeton won the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory II, totaling 149 points to edge out Ivy rival Cornell, which finished with 144.33 points. Austin Hollimon was named the Oustanding Athlete of the Meet after winning the 400m dash in 46.47, a Princeton record and the current fourth fastest time in the nation.

At the Penn State National, Columbia's Justin Holloman ran the 200m dash in 22.12, breaking the Lions' old record of 22.27. The 5,000m run at the Boston University Terrier Classic and Penn State National was a big one for the Ivy men as three runners from Dartmouth and one from Penn broke into the nation's top 20. The Big Green's Phil Royer is No. 7 after racing to a time of 14:07.48, Ethan Shaw is No. 10 (14:18.10) and Adam Doherty is No. 15 (14:25.76). For the Quakers, Philip Cawkwell holds the No. 20 best time of 14:33.62.
