The Cornell women's track and field team posted a furious rally in the second half of day two of the finals of the 2008 Outdoor Heptagonal Championships in New Haven, Conn., claiming the Big Red's seventh consecutive outdoor crown. Cornell outdistanced second-place Princeton by 24 points, 165-141.
Meanwhile the Big Red men had a dominating performance, posting the highest point total in the history of the Outdoor Heptagonal championships with 199 points to claim Cornell's sixth straight Outdoor Heps title. The Big Red easily outpaced second-place Princeton, which finished with 128 points.
The women's team trailed the Tigers, 113-63, through the first 12 scoring events, but the Big Red began to mount the comeback. Wins by Joan Casey (110m hurdles), Maria Matos (discus) and Jessica Weyman (400m hurdles) helped to cut the deficit to just 10 points, 131-121, with the 200m, 3000m, triple jump, and the two relays still to be scored. Jeomi Maduka then captured the 200m title, and without any point scorers from Princeton in that event, the two teams drew level.
An outstanding finish from Aeriel Emig in the 3000m, taking third place, helped the Big Red claim a three-point lead, one that would not be relinquished. Maduka claimed the triple jump crown as expected as the Big Red began to pull away. Cornell capped the afternoon with a runner-up finish in the 4x800m relay and a win in the 4x400m relay.
Maduka, who won three individual events, was second in a fourth, and was a part of the winning 4x100m relay team, was named the co-Athlete of the Meet along with Penn's Stacey Kim, who won both the 1500m and the 3000m. This marks the fourth consecutive meet that Maduka has won the top individual honor. The junior became the 11th female athlete in league history to win three individual outdoor titles in the same meet. Kim broke a 12-year-old meet record and her own school mark in the 1500 with a time of 4:20.75.
On the men's side, the Big Red, which won as a result of its tremendous depth, got wins on Sunday from Adam Seabrook (400m, 400m hurdles), Saidu Ezike (110m hurdles), Garrett Huyler (high jump) and Muhammad Halim (triple jump) in addition to the 4x400m relay team of Marcel Van Eeden, Michael Kippins, Cody Boyd and Seabrook.
Seabrook, by virtue of his winning the 400m and 400m hurdles double, was named as the Outstanding Performer of the Meet. Seabrook and Halim, who won the long jump on Saturday, became the 11th and 12th Cornellians to win two events in the same meet. Halim additionally became the first Cornellian to win multiple events in back-to-back Outdoor Heptagonal games, and the 15th person in Ivy League history to accomplish the feat.
