PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League women’s
volleyball embarks on a third and final round of tournament play
this week as they prepare to begin League play the following
week.
Columbia and Brown each host an invitational on Friday and
Saturday, Cornell travels to the Colgate Invitational, Harvard is
at the Northwestern Invitational, Princeton takes part in the Penn
State Classic, Dartmouth heads to the Holly Young Invitational in
New Hampshire and Penn and Yale trek to the West Coast for the Cal
State Fullerton Classic.
Prior to the weekend’s tournament action, however, Dartmouth
and Harvard each play a single match on Tuesday. The Crimson travel
to Holy Cross and the Big Green looks to win its seventh straight
and remain undefeated against Bryant.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth remained undefeated at 6-0 after two weekends of play,
thanks to the play of Madeline Baird (Austin,
Texas). The junior outside hitter led the Big Green to a perfect
3-0 at the Quinnipiac Tournament, earning all-tournament honors for
the second consecutive tournament. Baird totalled 46 kills, 44 digs
and three service aces in the three matches, while hitting at an
impressive .317 clip.
In the closest match of the weekend against host Quinnipiac, Baird
recorded 15 kills, including three in a row twice to help the Big
Green rally to come from behind in the second set against the
Bobcats. She also had 15 digs in that match. In the tournament
opener against Hartford, Baird tallied a double-double of 14 kills
and 12 digs. In the finale of the weekend, she recorded her fifth
double-double of the season with a team-high 17 kills and 17
digs.
She currently leads the team with 84 kills (4.20 per set) and four
service aces while also notching 78 digs (3.90 per set).
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman outside hitter Erica Reetz (Thiensville,
Ohio) posted a team-best 32 kills, helping the Yale Bulldogs to a
pair of wins at the Blackbird Invitational in Long Island. Reetz,
who also chipped in 19 digs, three blocks and one service ace, was
named to the all-tournament team along and is the second
consecutive Bulldog to be named Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
In Yale’s tournament opener against NJIT, Reetz pounded out
a team-best 13 kills and had just one error in 35 attempts for a
.343 hitting percentage. She also added 10 digs in the 3-0 win. The
Bulldogs dropped a 3-1 decision to Georgetown in their second
match, but Reetz chipped in a solid nine kills and eight digs. In
the tournament finale, Reetz reached double figures again with 10
kills (.391 hitting percentage) as the Bulldogs swept host Long
Island in straight sets.
For the season, Reetz is now averaging 2.47 kills and 2.84 digs
per set for the 5-1 Bulldogs.
