Women's Volleyball Weekly Release - Week 3
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League women's
volleyball closes out the majority of its non-conference slate this
weekend with another two days of packed tournament play.
Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn and Yale all host their
own tournaments on Friday and Saturday while Cornell makes the
short trip to Buffalo for the Blue and White Classic and Princeton
treks just across the state line to Bethlehem, Pa., for the
Lehigh/Lafayette Invitational.
Led by senior middle blocker Cathryn Quinn who
enters the week in the League lead in kills (3.91), blocks (1.92)
and points (5.09), the Tigers hope to build on its solid road wins
over St. John's and Rutgers last week with host Lehigh, Hartford
and La Salle on tap this weekend.
Dartmouth, ranked in the top three in five of the seven team
statistics categories among Ivy teams, looks to bounce back from a
tough weekend at the West Point Challenge at Holy Cross on Tuesday
before welcoming Central Connecticut State, Delaware State and
Providence to Leede Arena over the weekend.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth senior outside hitter Madeline Baird
(Austin, Texas) was the model of consistency over the course of the
Big Green's four matches at the West Point Challenge, earning
all-tournament team honors. She averaged 4.00 kills per set and
added 2.88 digs per set in a win over Marist and tough four-set
losses to Arkansas and host Army and a grueling five-set defeat to
NJIT.
Against Arkansas, Baird was the only Dartmouth player with 10 or more kills with 17, adding seven digs. She connected on three consecutive kills in the fourth set to even the match at 24. Arkansas closed out the match with back-to-back kills by Jasmine Norton to win the fourth, 27-25.
Baird recorded three-straight double-doubles (16 kills, 13 digs vs. Marist; 16 kills, 13 digs vs. Army and 22 kills, 14 digs vs. NJIT) to close out the weekend with 68 kills and 49 digs along with 10 assists.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Yale freshman outside hitter Mollie Rogers (San
Diego, Calif.) turned in a strong weekend for the Bulldogs, earning
all-tournament team honors at the Terrapin Invitational at the
University of Maryland.
Rogers led the Bulldogs in kills against Maryland and Delaware, while posting double-doubles in both matches. She had 22 kills, hit .340 and added 12 digs in an intense five-set loss to Maryland. The next morning, Rogers posted 14 kills and 11 digs in a 3-1 win over Delaware. Later in the afternoon, Rogers had seven kills and 11 digs in a loss to Sacred Heart.
Through Yale's first six matches, Rogers leads the Bulldogs in kills with 77 and has been named to all-tournament teams of both tournaments the Bulldogs have participated in so far this season.
